Another promising MediaTek budget gaming chip

The MediaTek Helio G80 is slotted right in between the budget Helio G70 and the mid-range Helio G90T. Compared with Qualcomm chips, it should be close to the power of the Snapdragon 710/712.

The Helio G80 is a 12nm chip that comes with 2x ARM Cortex-A75 power cores clocked at 2.0GHz and 6x ARM Cortex-A55 efficiency chips at 1.8GHz. It is paired with the ARM Mali-G52 MC2 with a higher 950MHz speed versus the 820MHz of Helio G70.

To improve gaming, it has the HyperEngine Game Tech like the G90/G90T.

It also has support for up to FHD+ 60Hz screen, 2x LPDDRX RAM up to 8GB, eMMC 5.1 storage, and a 48MP single-cam at 17fps, 25MP single-cam at 30fps, and a 16MP + 16MP dual-cam at 30fps.

MediaTek highlighted that its ISP (Image Signal Processor) is capable of object recognition via Google Lens, Smart Photo Album, scene detection, scene segmentation with background removal, portrait mode enhancements, and facial recognition.

It also has EIS and Rolling Shutter Compensation support.

The chip also has WiFi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 5.0, and GPS/GLONASS/BeiDou/Galileo.

You will also find the Voice on Wakeup (VoW) support and an inertial navigation engine on the G80.

The G80 is expected to be available in affordable gaming smartphones soon.
