  • The two new watches come with an improved design and several new features.

Amazfit has refreshed its GTS and GTR fitness watches with a slightly different design and several new features. The Amazfit GTS 2 and Amazfit GTR 2 went official in China today. The Amazfit GTR 2 comes with a circular display, while the GTS 2 gets a square screen and looks like a certain very popular smartwatch. The two wearables are definitely slicker than before, but it’s what’s inside that counts. Here’s a breakdown of what you get in each of the new Amazfit watches.

Amazfit GTR 2 specs and features

Amazfit GTR 2

The Amazfit GTR 2 is less bulked-up this time around. It features a 1.39-inch AMOLED always-on display with a maximum brightness of 450 nits. The classic variant is equipped with a stainless steel body and a leather strap, while the sports model is fitted with an aluminum alloy body and a silicone strap.

In terms of tracking, the GTR 2 currently supports 12 professional sports modes and will support 90 in the future. It gets Huami’s proprietary BioTracker PPG heart-rate sensor capable of 24-hour heart-rate monitoring. The watch also features Amazfit’s signature PAI heart-rate analysis software that generates a health score based on a person’s activity and heart-rate during the day.

A significant new feature of the Amazfit GTR 2 (and also of the GTS 2) is blood oxygen monitoring. According to Huami, the new watches introduce OxygenBeats, a blood oxygen engine, and SomnusCare, a sleep engine. Together, the two engines help measure blood oxygen data to provide a score for the quality of breathing during sleep. Amazfit claims that the new blood oxygen sensor has a 96% accuracy rate.

Elsewhere, the Amazfit GTR 2 is also equipped with a built-in GPS + GLONASS positioning system, NFC, 38-day battery life, a voice assistant that can work offline, 5ATM water resistance, and 4GB of storage to store up to 600 music tracks. Lastly, the GTR 2 gets the ability to answer phone calls this time around. This feature was absent from its predecessor and was only available on the Amazfit Nexo till now. You can also view app and SMS notifications on the watch.

The Amazfit GTS 2 is the cheaper of the two smartwatches. Its predecessor was also a pretty neat fitness tracker but had a few glaring faults that made it hard to recommend. We’re hoping Amazfit has worked on those issues.

In terms of design, the Amazfit GTS 2 is lighter and thinner than the previous model. It has a 1.65-inch AMOLED screen with a maximum brightness of 450 nits. The display also has a scratch-resistant coating for added durability.

Like the GTR 2, the Amazfit GTS 2 currently features 12 professional sports modes and will get up to 90 in the future. Most of its features also remain the same as the GTR 2, including 5ATM water resistance, blood oxygen monitoring, 24-hour heart-rate tracking, support for receiving calls, 4GB of storage with the ability to store music, and built-in GPS. The only difference seems to be in design and battery life. The Amazfit GTS 2 promises a seven-day battery life, extendable by up to 20 hours with basic usage.

The Amazfit GTR 2 sports version is priced at 999 yuan (~$147), while the Amazfit GTR 2 classic version with a leather strap is priced at 1,099 yuan (~$161). The Amazfit GTS 2 is priced at 999 yuan (~$147). They will both be available in their home market of China starting September 23. There’s no word on global availability yet.
