Did Google just accidentally reveal the Pixel 5, Pixel 4a 5G launch date?

  • Google may have accidentally revealed the launch date for the Pixel 5 and 4a 5G.
  • The two phones could become available for pre-order in early October.

Google launched the long-awaited Pixel 4a just a few days back and also surprisingly confirmed that the more premium Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a 5G would follow. Now it seems that Google France may have accidentally revealed the date for the launch of the two new Pixels.

A 9to5Google reader from France recently discovered that the official Google blog post for the launch of the Pixel 4a also mentioned the pre-order date for the Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a 5G. The mention has since been taken down, but a cached version of the post exists and machine translation of the excerpt reads as follows:

The Pixel 4a (5G) and Pixel 5 will be available for pre-order from October 8, 2020.

Google usually opens up pre-orders for its phones on the same day as launch, so October 8 could be the day we see the Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a 5G go official. It seems about the right time too as Google has already confirmed a fall launch for the phones and it has a tradition of unveiling flagship Pixels in October.

Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a 5G: Specs and pricing

Google gave us a sneak peek of the Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a 5G (see image above) on the day of the Pixel 4a launch, so we have some idea about how the devices look. We also know that the Pixel 4a 5G will cost $499 when it launches, but there’s still no word on the phone specs.

We also don’t know much about the Google Pixel 5 right now, except for a handful of rumors.

Leaks suggest that the Pixel 5 will not carry a flagship Snapdragon processor this year. We also recently came across some unconfirmed information alleging that the phone will feature a 120Hz display. As for its price, a Google survey suggests that the phone could start retailing at $699. If true, Google could have another stand-out device on its hands in a sea full of $1,000 flagships.

There is no productivity software

This article was originally published by Matthew Guay on Capiche, a secret society for SaaS power users, building a new community of people who care about software to make the SaaS industry more transparent, together. 300,000 people are on Superhuman’s waitlist, while 95,000 requested a Hey invite before it launched—both in pursuit of a more productive email experience. Enough people paid Roam Research from $15/month to $500 for 5 years that they hit $1 million in ARR only 6 weeks after launching paid plans. Give people a new productivity tool, and they’ll show up in droves. And woe betides if you take it away. There were…

OnePlus 7T and OnePlus 7T Pro updates

  • Current stable version: Android 10
  • When will the OnePlus 7T and 7T Pro get Android 11? September 2020 (estimated)

The OnePlus 7T and 7T Pro launched on September 26, 2019, and October 10, 2019, respectively. Both launched with the latest version of Android out-of-the-box (Android 10). It’s expected both devices will receive at least two major Android updates in the future — Android 11 in 2020 and Android 12 in 2021. It’s possible that it will also receive an update to Android 13 in 2022, as the OnePlus 3T received four flavors of Android during its update lifespan (Marshmallow, Nougat, Oreo, and Pie).

OnePlus rolled out Oxygen OS 10.0.5 for the OnePlus 7T on November 7, 2019. The update brought the Android security patch up to October 2019 and fixed an issue with the double-tap gesture when activating the screen. This is in addition to a bunch of general bug fixes and stability improvements.

On November 15, 2019, OnePlus began rolling out Oxygen OS 10.0.6 for the OnePlus 7T. The update brought optimizations to standby power consumption and the expanded screenshot feature. It also improved Bluetooth connectivity in cars.

OnePlus announced the Oxygen OS 10.0.6 update on its official community forums and you can view the full (but short) changelog here

Meanwhile, the OnePlus 7T Pro received the Oxygen OS 10.0.4 update. GSMArena spotted the 166MB update, which brought the security patch of the phone up to October 2019. It also optimized standby power, Bluetooth, and expanded screenshots just like the OnePlus 7T update. OnePlus also fixed the black bar issue while charging or playing a video.

In addition, both phones got general bug fixes and stability improvements.

In December, OnePlus rolled out Oxygen OS 10.0.7 for the OnePlus 7T and Oxygen OS 10.0.05 for the OnePlus 7T Pro. The new updates improved the launch speed of some apps, optimized RAM management, fixed black and white screen issues, and updated the Android security patch to November, 2019.

More recently, February 2020 brought Oxygen OS 10.0.7 (EU and global) and 10.3.1 (India) for OnePlus 7T Pro. This brought the January 2020 security patch, bug fixes, and several other minor tweaks.

In March, the OnePlus 7T and 7T Pro got their first Open Beta update. The update brought the February 2020 security patch, better RAM management, and several fixes. But the biggest addition was that of Live Caption, following in the footsteps of the Google Pixel series and Galaxy S20 family.

The second Open Beta followed late in March, bringing the March 2020 security patch, Instant Translation feature, and improved Adaptive Brightness.

Shortly after that, the OnePlus 7T Pro McLaren 5G received the Oxygen OS 10.0.31 stable update. The update rolled out to the T-Mobile variant, and it included 5G enhancements, the March security patch, and other general bug fixes.

We also saw the Open Beta 3 for the OnePlus 7T series land on May 15, bringing dirty lens warnings for the camera, 4K recording via the ultra-wide shooter, and 960fps video. It also packed the April 2020 security patch. The Open Beta 4 update arrived on May 21, fixing a few issues and packing the May 2020 security update.

We recently saw OnePlus push out the Open Beta 4 update to the OnePlus 7T series on May 28. The Oxygen OS 10.3.3 update for India and Oxygen OS 10.0.11 update for global devices was spotted by XDA-Developers and brings a few notable features. Some of the more prominent additions here include 960fps recording, the Epic Games store in the Game Space on Indian devices, and Dolby Atmos support for the Bullets Wireless Z.

In June, OnePlus rolled out Oxygen OS Beta 5 for the OnePlus 7T series. The updated added a couple of new features and plenty of smaller fixes that owners of the phone would appreciate. One of the biggest additions in this update was a new dark mode toggle that many users wanted for a long time. The June security patch was also released with this update. You can find the entire changelog here.

A foldable Google Pixel phone could be coming soon

  • An internal document has reportedly revealed several unannounced Pixel devices.
  • The devices include the Pixel 5a and a foldable Pixel.
  • The foldable Pixel could be set for a Q4 2021 launch window.

Google has just launched the Pixel 4a this week, while also confirming that the Pixel 4a 5G and Pixel 5 are coming later this year. The company might not be stopping there, as more evidence has emerged for a Pixel 5a and foldable Pixel, among other devices.

9to5Google viewed an internal Google document that contained a list of Android builds for all Pixel devices, including the Pixel 4a, Pixel 4a 5G, and Pixel 5. But the list is also said to include the Pixel 5a (purportedly code-named barbette) and three other unannounced devices.

The three other devices are code-named raven, oriole, and passport respectively, and 9to5Google says the latter device is specifically referred to as a foldable. The other two devices here are presumably Pixel 6 series phones. All three devices reportedly have a “Q4 2021” label, which would seemingly be the launch window.

This wouldn’t be the first time we heard about Google working on a foldable either, as Pixel chief Mario Queiroz confirmed last year that they were prototyping the technology. Furthermore, the Pixel 5a name also appeared in the Android Open Source Project a few days ago.

A foldable Google Pixel phone would be far more surprising than the Pixel 5a though, as it seems like budget Pixels are gaining steam. Foldable technology is arguably still in its infancy too. But between Samsung’s Flip and Fold devices and the Huawei Mate XS, it looks like the tech is definitely getting there.

So what would a foldable Pixel look like then? Well, it’s purely speculation at this point, but the passport code-name suggests something akin to the Galaxy Fold series rather than an out-folding design like the Mate XS.
