Apple Acknowledges Issue With Some Entry-Level 2019 13-Inch MacBook Pro Models Unexpectedly Shutting Down

Apple today posted a new support document outlining troubleshooting steps for users experiencing problems with unexpected shutdowns on the entry-level 2019 13-inch MacBook Pro with two Thunderbolt 3 ports, which was introduced back in July.


Apple's troubleshooting steps involve making sure the ‌MacBook Pro‌ has its battery level run down to below 90 percent, connecting it to a charger, quitting all open applications, and letting it sleep and charge for at least eight hours.

Once the ‌MacBook Pro‌ has been charged for at least eight hours, users should make sure they are running the latest version of macOS, and if the shutdown issue persists after following these steps, users should contact Apple for service.

There is a fairly lengthy thread in our forums where some users experiencing the issue have gathered to try to diagnose and troubleshoot their machines, and there are scattered reports of the issue in other discussion forums, including Apple's support forums.

Qualcomm introduces 3D Sonic Max, a larger and improved ultrasonic fingerprint reader

The first generation 3D Sonic Sensor assured improvement in terms of reliability and security when it was launched in Samsung’s Galaxy S10. But later on, it had lots of issues such as getting the smaller sensor to read prints accurately, slow speeds, and a glaring security hole caused by some types of screen protectors that were only fixed in October.

This time, the second-generation fingerprint sensor is claimed to be 17 times larger, which solves the problems of original 3D Sonic. The old sensor measured 4mm x 9mm whereas the new 3D Sonic Max is 20mm x 30mm. To prevent positioning issues, the bigger sensor will make it more convenient to place a fingerprint.

According to an interview, Alex Katouzian, SVP, and general manager of mobile at Qualcomm explained that with the latest 3D Sonic Max, the screen protector problems should be avoided. This is said to enable capturing a clearer complete fingerprint when reading, because of the larger scanner size.

Aside from that, there is an option to require two synchronized fingerprints to be scanned together in order to heighten security. Katouzian added that scanning a fingerprint will take almost the same amount of time as the older one did.

There’s still no information yet to which companies will utilize the new 3D Sonic Max, but there might be updates next year. Also, rumors said that Apple is discovering using Qualcomm’s tech to add an in-display fingerprint reader to the iPhone as early as 2020.
