Google’s first Pixel feature drop boosts performance, updates Photos, Call Screen, Duo (Update: Quarterly releases planned)

Just a few days after we covered some possible upcoming features for the Pixel phones thanks to a teardown of the Pixel Tips app, Google officially introduced them as part of the first "Pixel feature drop." Other than memory enhancements to the Pixel phones, you'll find app-specific improvements in this update such as the option to add blur to any picture in Google Photos, automatic Call Screen support for robocalls, and improvements to Duo.

Pixel’s improved RAM management set to appear on other Android phones

Google Pixel 4 XL home screen standing up 5

The Google Pixel series received a so-called “feature drop” this week, bringing quite a few additions to these devices. One of these additions is an improved way to manage RAM, compressing cached apps to reduce their footprint.

Now, The Verge has interviewed a Google representative and reported that this method of RAM management “should” make its way to other Android phones.

As for a timeline? The website says it’s possible the functionality will only come to other Android phones in the next Android version (Android R/11). In other words, the Pixel series may have received an Android feature almost a year before other phones.

The Pixel series certainly needed better RAM management though, as Pixel 3 owners in particular frequently complained about the phone hastily killing background apps. Fortunately, the Pixel 4 series offered more RAM, going from the Pixel 3’s 4GB to 6GB.

But the improved memory management should be a plus for the Pixel 4 and OEM devices with more RAM nonetheless, especially when new Android versions are released down the line. Hopefully manufacturers make an effort to bring this feature to their budget phones (i.e. 3GB of RAM and under), as it could make a massive difference on these devices.

This wouldn’t be the only feature coming to the next version of Android though, as Google previously confirmed that scrolling screenshot functionality is in the works too.

Google Dialer bug means bank services, conference calls are a no-go

The Google Phone Dialer icon on a Pixel phone.

The phone app is one of the defining features on smartphones today (it’s even in the name!), but it looks like this functionality is broken for some Google Dialer/Phone users.

Smartphone users have reported that a recent Google Dialer app update — issued last month — has broken functionality in a big way. More specifically, the dialpad doesn’t appear when you’re in a call.

This bug is very significant as it means people are unable to navigate telephonic menu options from the likes of their bank. It also makes life difficult if you need to enter a PIN for conference calls.

The Google Dialer/Phone app page on the Play Store is filled with negative reviews noting the flaw. Many users are also reporting the issue on Nexus devices (Nexus 5X, Nexus 6, Nexus 6P), and we’ve also seen a Pixel 2 owner report the problem on the support forum. But the extent of the problem isn’t immediately clear. Google’s app is available on its Nexus/Pixel phones and reportedly on some Motorola devices as well.

We’ve contacted Google to find out about a possible fix, and will update the article when they get back to us. Have you noticed this problem on your phone? Let us know in the comments section.

Thanks to Jack Lovell for the tip!
