Apple Avoids iPhone Tariffs as U.S. and China Reach Trade Deal

Apple won't be hit with hefty tariffs on the iPhone, iPad, and MacBooks as U.S. President Donald Trump this afternoon signed off on a trade deal with China.

Speaking in a note to investors shared by Bloomberg, Wedbush Securities analyst Dan Ives said that the new tariffs could have added approximately $150 to the price of iPhones during the holiday season.

"Trump delivered an early Christmas present to Apple. If this tariff went through it would have been a major gut punch for semi players/Apple and could have thrown a major wrench into the supply chain and demand for the holiday season."
If Apple absorbed the cost of the tariffs, the company's earnings per share would have shrunk by approximately four percent, according to Ive. Raising prices could have caused ‌iPhone‌ demand to shrink by an estimated six to eight percent in 2020.

Apple is paying tariffs on the Apple Watch, AirPods, iMac components, and HomePod speaker, which could potentially be eliminated now that a deal has been reached. Apple in November also applied for tariff waivers on these items.

The tariffs that were avoided today were originally set to be put in place in August, but were delayed until December 15 to give the U.S. and China more time to reach an agreement.

Apple CEO Tim Cook has been speaking with Trump about the tariffs, and in August reportedly made a "good case" arguing that tariffs would put Apple at a disadvantage with rivals like Samsung. Apple earlier this year also sent a letter to Apple urging the Trump administration not to proceed with the tariffs.

Cook in late October said that he was confident the United States and China would resolve the trade dispute. "I don't know every chapter of the book, but I think that will eventually happen," said Cook.

Xiaomi patent shows off Razr-style foldable phone

Xiaomi foldable clamshell patent 2LetsGoDigital

Xiaomi teased a foldable smartphone prototype back in January but we haven’t really heard much from the company after that. It’s possible the firm is simply waiting for the right time to launch them.

Meanwhile, a 2018 patent filed by the Chinese company has recently been approved. It has also made its way into the World Intellectual Property Office (WIPO) database.

Spotted by LetsGoDigital, the Xiaomi patent shows a Moto Razr-like clamshell foldable phone. The device has a large display which folds in half in the middle, protecting the screen as a result. This is unlike the previous double-fold design we’ve seen on Xiaomi’s foldable prototype. It’s also starkly different from the likes of the Galaxy Fold and Mate X which open up to become a tablet.

Pop-up camera, second display

Unlike the Moto Razr, Xiaomi’s new foldable smartphone patent shows a pop-up selfie camera. The selfie camera setup includes a camera, a flash, and another unknown sensor which could help with face detection, notes LetsGoDigital.

Editor's Pick

There’s a separate rear camera system and a tiny display above it. The rear camera comprises a dual-sensor setup alongside the flash. The secondary display at the back looks to be a dedicated notification screen for when the phone is folded. It could help keep track of incoming calls and messages without having to unfold the main screen.

From the looks of it, the patented foldable phone does have a pretty realistic design. However, companies file many patents and it doesn’t necessarily mean Xiaomi will launch this phone. The company could just be covering its bases as far as foldable phones go, trying to find the right design it can eventually bring to the market.

Apart from Xiaomi, Samsung is also working on a clamshell foldable phone design. You can read all about it here.

The most popular mobile platform for Pornhub in 2019 wasn’t Android

Pornhub on a smartphone.

Android is the world’s most popular mobile platform, as there are thousands of models at various price points. But you wouldn’t know that looking at Pornhub’s 2019 Year in Review.

The adult streaming service revealed that iOS accounted for 52.8% of all mobile traffic in 2019. Meanwhile, Android accounted for 46.6% of traffic this year. Other platforms accounted for 0.5% of traffic.

In fact, Pornhub said Android traffic dropped by 14% compared to 2018, while iOS traffic rose by 19%. So what’s the reason for this massive change, then?

“A closer look revealed that much of this change had to do with geography,” the company explained on its Insights blog (semi-NSFW). “Android based devices are quite popular in India, so when India’s traffic decreased in 2019, it caused the share of Android devices to decrease.”

India’s traffic drop was quite significant by Pornhub’s own figures, going from number three in 2018 to number 15 this year. Pornhub suggested that this drop was due to the Indian government blocking access to some porn websites.

Google Chrome was just ahead of Apple when it came to mobile browser traffic though, accounting for 44.3% of traffic compared to Safari’s 41.6%. Both Google and Apple’s browsers rose to the occasion at the expense of UC Browser and Opera.

Samsung’s browser continued its upward trajectory too, now accounting for 6.2% of mobile traffic. This is due to 28% year-on-year growth compared to last year, and 69% (nice) growth from 2017 to 2018.

The adult streaming service also looked at the most popular gaming platforms used for Pornhub viewing. It found that PlayStation consoles were in first place with 51.5% of the traffic, followed by the Xbox brand at 34.7%. PlayStation traffic dropped 5.2% year-on-year, while Microsoft’s platforms grew 5.3%.

In a bizarre turn of events, the ill-fated PlayStation Vita handheld continues to grow its market-share, going from 7.3% of gaming traffic in 2018 to 9.1% this year. The Vita’s growth is pretty odd because it ceased production earlier this year and was drubbed by the Nintendo 3DS.

Another rather interesting statistic is that the biggest TV/broadcast-related influence on Pornhub traffic was the iPhone 11 launch event.

“The Apple Special Event is streamed live every fall and always causes a big traffic drop on Pornhub, in particular from people watching on their Apple based devices,” the website explained. “This year worldwide iOS traffic dropped by 15% as the new iPhone 11 variants were revealed.”
