Google activates RCS messaging in the US (Update: Available to all US users)

google messages chat features read receipts typing indicators rcs app google pixel 4 xl 5

Update, December 13, 2019 (2:23AM ET): RCS messaging is now available to all Android users in the US. Google’s Head of Communication Products, Sanaz Ahari, confirmed the news in a tweet. Users are advised to update both the Messages and Carrier Services apps to be able to use RCS.

In order to update your carrier services, head to the Google Play Store. Now, tap the hamburger menu > My Apps & Games > Update Carrier Services. You can then follow the steps here to activate RCS messaging on your phone’s Android Messages app.

News of the widespread availability comes just under a month after Google first announced that it was turning on RCS in the country.

Original Article, November 14, 2019 (12:32 PM ET): The day is finally here: if you use the Messages app as your texting application, you now or will soon have access to RCS messaging in the United States. It doesn’t matter which wireless carrier you use or what the make and model of your smartphone is — if you use Messages, Google is switching it on for you.

Previously, savvy users discovered a hack to turn this feature on ahead of time. That hack stopped working off and on for a bit, but now it looks like the hack won’t be necessary.

Keep in mind that once you get RCS features on your phone, the other person(s) you’re communicating with will also need to be using Messages for all RCS features to work. However, that’s a small price to pay to finally step up from SMS/MMS messaging on your smartphone.

In order to access RCS messaging — which Google brands as Chat — you’ll need to turn on the feature within the Messages app. You should see a notification to do so at some point soon if you’re already using Messages, but it could take a while before you see the feature as Google is doing one of its classic slow rollouts for the new setting.

Once you do turn on Chat, you will see new features and tools when you text with someone who also uses the Messages app and enabled Chat. For example, you’ll be able to see when they are typing, whether or not they’ve read your message, and even send cute animated GIFs. Check it out in action below:

RCS messaging Chat features in MessagesGoogle

What happens if you are using Messages but the person you’re communicating with is not? If that’s the case, the messages you send and receive will default back to the regular SMS/MMS protocols and things will work as they have for the past decade.

Unfortunately, this will also be the case if you are texting with someone who uses an iPhone and relies on iMessages. Your texts with them will still turn the chat window into green bubbles and read receipts, typing notifications, etc. will not appear on either side of the conversation. In order for this to change, Apple would need to alter the way it runs its own messaging system.

Still, Google turning on RCS messaging without getting the wireless carriers in the United States on board first is a big, bold step by the company. Now that Google has made the move, the carriers will need to respond by finally getting in gear and rolling out some form of a network-agnostic RCS system. Although, judging from their announcement of their intention to create a new RCS-enabled messaging app — rather than working together to make it so any messaging app can take advantage of RCS features — doesn’t bode well. But hey, whatever, we can just use Messages and the carriers can continue to hang out in the early 2000s.

Sick of messages from unknown businesses? Google will help you now

Google Verified SMSGoogle

These days, our SMS inboxes are full of messages from businesses, retailers, and various online service providers. Some of these are useful, such as one-time passwords, account alerts or appointment confirmations. However, these messages come from random numbers and it’s hard to tell if they’re from legitimate sources or from bad actors posing as a business.

To fix the problem, Google is now rolling out a new Verified SMS feature to Android Messages in a few countries. The feature will help users identify SMS senders.

How Verified SMS works

When an SMS is verified by Google, you will be able to see the business name and logo of the sender, as well as a verified badge.

In case you’re worried about Google reading your messages, the company says that it “translates the message you receive into an unreadable authenticity code, all on your device.”

This unreadable authenticity code is then compared with unreadable authenticity codes sent to Google by the business. If they match, Google verifies the business successfully.

How to turn on Verified SMS?

You can follow the steps below to turn on the Verified SMS feature.

  1. Open the Messages app.
  2. Tap the three-dot menu > Settings.
  3. Tap Verified SMS.
  4. Toggle the Verify business message sender switch.

Is Verified SMS available in my country?

Google says 1-800-Flowers, Banco Bradesco, Kayak, Payback, and SoFi are among the first brands to send messages with Verified SMS. In India, Google Pay and verification codes from Google will be enrolled for Verified SMS. The company says more businesses will come aboard in the future.

The new feature is now rolling out to Android Messages in the US, India, Mexico, Brazil, UK, France, Philippines, Spain and Canada. More countries will be added soon, says Google.

Spam detection in Android Messages

Google Messages Spam DetectionGoogle

Google is also rolling out Spam Protection in the US. The feature has already been available in a few countries. The real-time Spam Protection feature warn you of suspected unsafe links and websites contained in an SMS.

If you see a suspected spam warning in Messages, you can let Google know if it’s spam or not by tapping Report spam or Report not spam.

Unlike Verified SMS, the Spam Protection feature will be turned on automatically. However, you can follow the steps below to turn it off.

  1. Open the Messages app .
  2. Tap More > Settings.
  3. Tap Advanced > Spam protection.
  4. Turn it on or off.

Verified SMS and Spam Protection are the latest in Google’s efforts to improve Android Messages. The company also recently rolled out Rich Communication Services across the US to make messaging even more seamless. You can read all about RCS on Android Messages here.

October 2, 2019: Around two weeks ago, OnePlus started rolling out the Android 10 update for the OnePlus 7 series. However, according to users on Reddit as well as the official OnePlus forums, many people still don’t have the update. OnePlus did say the Android 10 upgrade would be a slow rollout, but that usually means over the span of a few days. At this point, it’s been 12 days since OnePlus announced the launch, which suggests there’s been some sort of delay. It’s possible OnePlus halted the rollout entirely. Read the full story here.

October 10, 2019: OnePlus has announced that every OnePlus device from the OnePlus 5 forward will get a stable version of Android 10. Older devices will need to wait quite a while to get it, but the update will come. November 12, 2019: Pete Lau has explained on the company’s forum why OnePlus 7 Pro 5G users have to wait until Q1 to get the Android 10 update. The executive said that 5G “uses a different communications module to establish a faster connection as opposed to 4G, and requires a deeper level of understanding and more rigorous tests, debugging and optimizations to be done to our software and hardware.” He also added that “to achieve the best experience possible, we had to make system optimizations from the fundamental system architecture, in order to deliver a truly fantastic 5G experience.” It looks like the process is a lot more complicated and time-consuming than it may look, which is why users will have to wait a few months for the update. You can read his full statement here.

November 15, 2019: The Android 10 update for the OnePlus 6 and 6T has been halted due to various bugs. OnePlus said it’s “working on a new build with more issue fixing.” The company didn’t specify when the update will roll out globally, only saying it’ll be available “once it’s ready.”

3. Samsung Android 10 update

Android 10 update for Samsung phones

September 17, 2019: Looks like Samsung will soon release its first Android 10 beta update. Rumors have it that the company will roll it out in the US and Europe in early October. There’s no word on which devices will get it, but it’s a good bet we’ll see it on new flagship series such as the Galaxy Note 10 and the Galaxy S10.

October 23, 2019: Samsung has confirmed that the One UI 2.0 beta — based on Android 10 — for the Galaxy Note 10 series will come to the US. The rollout seems to be restricted to the regular Note 10 and Note 10 Plus models, with no mention of the 5G variants. Only unlocked phones will be compatible. In addition to the US, the beta program has also been confirmed for Germany.

November 7, 2019: The third iteration of the One UI 2.0 beta is rolling out now to Samsung Galaxy S10, S10 Plus, and S10e devices. The latest version of the Android 10-based update is available now to all beta program testers and includes a bunch of bug fixes — learn more here.

The same update will likely hit devices in the US, Germany, and South Korea soon.

November 20, 2019: Samsung is shipping out the Android 10-based One UI 2.0 beta to the Galaxy Note 9 in South Korea. This bodes well for a release in other markets, as Samsung doesn’t usually take its time to bring a One UI 2.0 beta to other regions. So we’re expecting a US and European roll-out in the coming days.

November 21, 2019: Samsung is pushing out the sixth beta update to the Galaxy S10 family. The update is apparently being rolled out to all countries where the Galaxy S10 beta is available — learn more here.

November 29, 2019: Samsung UK and India have revealed their Android 10 update roadmaps, which are a little bit different than the one shared by Samsung Israel a few days ago. Samsung’s 2 018 and 2019 flagships will get updated to Android 10-based One UI 2.0 in January 2020 in both countries. This differs from the Israeli roadmap, which shows that the Galaxy S9 series will only get the update in April 2020, while the other 2018 and 2019 flagships get it in January.

The Indian roadmap also gives us update details regarding the Galaxy M series, noting that the Galaxy M20 and M30 will receive the Android 10 update in January 2020. Other M-series phones slated to get the update are the Galaxy M40 (March 2020), Galaxy M30s (April 2020), and Galaxy M10s (May 2020).

December 3, 2019: After being released in Germany a week ago, the Android 10-based One UI 2.0 update for the Galaxy S10 phones is now rolling out in a bunch of other countries. These include Algeria, Bangladesh, France, India, Ireland, Poland, Russia, Spain, the UAE, and the UK, among others.

December 10, 2019: SamMobile reports that the Galaxy S10 5G is now getting the stable version of Android 10 with One UI 2.0 on top in South Korea. The update is expected to reach other markets soon.

Although there are straightforward instructions on how to flash one of these Android 10 Nokia beta builds to your device — learn more here — we’d advise against doing so if you use that phone as your daily driver. November 13, 2019: According to a few users on Reddit, the Chinese variant of the Huawei P30 Pro is receiving the Android 10 update. The problem is that one Redditor claims the 4.99GB update left him without the ability to use the Google Play Store. We don’t know how many users will encounter this issue, but we expect it will be isolated to Chinese variants of Huawei’s devices. For now, there’s no word on when the update will reach other markets, but we likely won’t have to wait much longer.

Vivo Android update

Vivo technically fulfilled its promise of updating its phones with Pie by the end of 2018. However, we wouldn’t see the stable release until March. Even stranger, Pie rolled out to only a handful of Vivo smartphones.

With such a strange update schedule, we wouldn’t be surprised if Vivo started rolling out the stable version of Android 10 next year. Then again, the Vivo X27 is part of the Android 10 beta program, so we could see it a bit sooner.
