All the latest Android developer news and features you need to know about

Android Studio

December has been a relatively quiet month in the world of Android development, with fewer posts over at the Android Developers blog than usual, and many other sites taking a break for the holidays. Hey, devs need a break every now and then too!

That said, there have still been a few exciting announcements to cover, including the release of a new Android Game SDK, and a powerful code search tool. Consider this a case of quality-over-quantity, then. Read below for the full scoop.

News and announcements

Code Search with Cross References for the Android Open Source Project – Google announces what may prove an extremely useful tool for Android developers: a search engine for code. See more below.

Android Game SDK

From Google

Android Game SDK – Android Game SDK offers a selection of libraries direct from Google to enhance game development on the platform. The first library that will land as part of this new initiative is designed to help developers with frame pacing.

The Frame Pacing Library will use Android’s Choreographer API to synchronize with the display system. This helps ensure frames appear when they should, to avoid buffering and stuttering, and to keep audio in-pace.

Android 10 on Android TV – Pretty much this article is what it says on the tin. On December 10, Google brought Android API level 29 to Android TV. This will mean faster updates through Project Treble, more secure storage, and other goodies from the latest iteration of Android.

Another new TV-centric feature for developers is ADT-3. This is a dongle aimed at developers to test their apps on the platform. It will be made available soon, and you can be sure to find out about it here in the coming months.

Features and resources from around the web

Making an app with no programming experience: What are your options? This post explores how you might set about developing an app with no coding skills. It covers app builders, as well as numerous other options.

Code Search Code Search is a new tool from Google that has the potential to be extremely useful. This is a search engine that focuses specifically on Android code, sorting through git repositories like github, gitweb, etc. What’s unique about this, is that you can actually search within the code itself for specific commands or keywords. In short, you can actually view the code before you decide if you might be interested in using it.

Android Code Search

We all know that programming is essentially a process of lifting bits of code and stitching them together like a Frankenstein’s monster (right?). This has potentially to streamline that process considerably!

Kotlin/Everywhere – it’s a wrap! At Google I/O, Google announced it would be increasingly placing the focus of Android development on Kotlin. Kotlin/Everywhere was a series of events discussing the language. This post includes links to various talks and resources for those that missed the live events.

Workplace for Kotlin code in IDE This post shares a method for testing snippets of Kotlin code without deploying your entire app, via REPL.

Lost Crypt 2D sample project for Unity – Unity has introduced a host of new 2D features pertinent to Android developers over recent months. This new sample project serves as a useful demonstration of how best to use them.

Lost Crypt Android Developer News

From Unity

Speed up your Android dynamic features flow testing – Dynamic delivery has a lot of uses for devs and can enhance the user experience significantly. However, testing these features can be tricky. This post explains the solution, using the Gradle Play Publisher plugin.

Gesture Navigation: Insets – Insets help to improve gesture navigation by avoiding conflicts with existing UI features.

Migrating from Fingerprint Manager to BiometricPrompt – A handy guide (pun intended) to switching to the newish AndroidX Biometric Library.

And that’s it – see you next month!

The Golden Globes TV schedule

The coverage from the event starts as early as 4PM EST and continues for two hours after the event wraps up. Those who really want to get into this will have roughly seven hours of actual programming. Additionally, this list is based on the 2019 Golden Globes TV schedule as many of these events haven’t been announced yet. However, we assume all of them will be available this year as well and we’ll update when the official TV schedule is out.

4PM-6PM – E! Countdown to the Red Carpet on the E! Channel.

6PM-8PM – E! Live From the Red Carpet on the E! Channel.

6PM-8PM – E! Stream: The Red Carpet via Twitter and eonline.com.

6PM-8PM – HFPA Presents Globes Red Carpet Live via Facebook Watch.

7PM-8PM – NBC’s carpet coverage begins at 7PM and runs right into the beginning of the show.

8PM-10PM – The 77th Annual Golden Globes via NBC on TV, the web, and NBC’s official app (iOS download link). Hosted by Ricky Gervais.

10PM-11PM – Busy Tonight Live: Golden Globes After Party on the E! Channel.

Watch the Golden Globes with cable TV

YouTube TV Golden Globes

NBC is where the Golden Gloves are airing. The good news is that NBC is available basically everywhere, even for free. Very nearly all basic cable and satellite TV packages come with NBC by default so those of you with cable just need to hit up your TV guide and figure out where NBC is on your channel lineup.

Those without cable should still be able to watch the Golden Globes without much difficulty. Local NBC affiliates should air the event and that means it’s accessible via digital TV antennas. You can pick up a digital TV antenna for about $25-$30 on Amazon or Best Buy. Those who live rather far outside of a major city may need to look for more powerful antennas.

Unfortunately, a lot of the post show and pre-show festivities take place on the E! channel. You’ll definitely need a cable subscription for access to E! and it’s not available to digital TV antenna users. Of course, you can always catch the live streams on Facebook Watch or E!’s Twitter account if you want to see some red carpet stuff from the Golden Globes

How to stream the Golden Globes

Facebook Logo App

Streaming the event is fairly easy. Those with cable can use NBC’s official app (or official website) with their cable provider login info and stream it directly on their smartphones. Additionally, many live TV streaming services like Hulu TV, YouTube TV, Sling TV, Fubo TV, and AT&T TV should all have NBC. You can use any of those services to stream the Golden Globes. Many of them also carry E! as either a basic channel or as an extra (in the case of Sling TV) so you can get everything from one single TV subscription.

In terms of additional coverage, access is free and easy to find. E!’s Twitter account and official website are should stream the pre-show live. Additionally, Facebook Watch’s official Golden Globes page is here in case you want to watch the pre-show there.

Unfortunately, without some sort of live TV subscription, it’s not possible to legally stream the Golden Globes for free. However, you can enjoy virtually all of the pre-show stuff via the free internet streams linked above. If you really want to watch it and don’t want to pay for it, all of the internet TV providers listed earlier have free trials. Simply sign up for one a couple of days before the Golden Globes and try out the service while watching it for free.

How to watch the Golden Globes free

This is harder said than done. The easiest and most efficient way is to use a digital antenna to connect your TV to your local NBC affiliate. Again, you can buy those on Amazon or Best Buy for about $25. The good news is that they give you TV continually and you should be able to watch next year’s Golden Globes that way as well.

In terms of streaming, there are no places online that offer to stream it for free legally. That doesn’t mean you’re out of luck, though. As we stated earlier, you can stream the Golden Globes for free by using a free trial for one of the bit internet TV services. Most of them include 7- to 14-day free trials and that should give you plenty of time to set one up.

Additional information

The Golden Globes is a massive annual event and there are a lot of other things happening. The official schedule includes:

December 19, 2019 – Final Golden Globes ballots are mailed to all HFPA voters.

December 30, 2019 – Deadline for the final ballots. All voters must submit their ballots by this date. The ballots are handled by the Ernst & Young accounting firm.

January 5, 2020 – The presentation of the 77th Annual Golden Globe Awards takes place.

You can find the full list of nominees from the December 9th announcement here from the official Golden Globes website. Another fun resource is this list of snubs and surprises from E! and the official Golden Globes Twitter and Facebook pages.
