New OnePlus 8 Lite image shows previous renders got the camera setup wrong

oneplus 8 lite dummy leak slashleaksSlashleaks

OnePlus is expected to announce three phones in the upcoming OnePlus 8 series. These include: OnePlus 8, OnePlus 8 Pro, and a mid-range OnePlus 8 Lite. We previously saw leaked renders of the OnePlus 8 Pro and the OnePlus 8 Lite. Both sets of renders were released by serial tipster OnLeaks. Now, it looks like at least one of those renders was slightly off.

As per older renders, we expected the OnePlus 8 Lite to feature a dual camera setup at the back. However, a new image leaked on Slashleaks claims to show a dummy OnePlus 8 Lite phone with triple rear shooters. You can see the image above.

The suspected OnePlus 8 Lite dummy image was sourced from a video. We assume this video shows OnePlus staff talking about various OnePlus phones. The so-called OnePlus 8 Lite dummy is seen sitting quietly in a box, showing off its triple camera bump at the back.

Obviously, it’s hard to tell if this is indeed a OnePlus 8 Lite dummy or a prototype device. Nevertheless, tipster OnLeaks has also revised his render of the phone to include the additional third camera.

OnePlus 8 Lite camera specs

A leaked spec sheet had previously outed the camera specs of the OnePlus 8 Lite. The leak was spotted on Chinese social media website Weibo and we hadn’t really taken it into consideration until now.

It states that the OnePlus 8 Lite would get a 48MP main camera, a 16MP ultra-wide lens, and a 12MP telephoto shooter. We’d still advise readers to take these specs with a pinch of salt as none of the usual leak sources have jumped on these specs yet.

The OnePlus 8 Lite is expected to launch earlier than the OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro. If so, we’ll probably know more about the phone in the coming days.

What do you think of this latest image of the OnePlus 8 Lite? Do you feel it’s legit? Drop us a line in the comments section.

Samsung Galaxy S10 Lite, Note 10 Lite hands-on: Powerful specs in low-end bodies

The Samsung Galaxy S10 Lite and Note 10 Lite were first made official a few days ago, and the Korean manufacturer had both devices on-hand in Las Vegas for CES 2020.

Both phones share design similarities to the rumored Galaxy S11 series. More specifically, we’ve got a camera housing that bears a resemblance to the leaked Galaxy S11 renders. If you’re in the market for a cheaper high-end phone but don’t like the Galaxy S11 design, well, you might have to just get used to it.

Otherwise, the Galaxy Lite devices both feel a little cheap due to the plastic design. But this an understandable tweak given that compromises likely had to be made to reach a better price point. The presence of center-mounted punch-hole displays (complete with a 32MP sensor) and the welcome return of flat screens are appreciated though.

Samsung’s latest phones also share a similar 6.7-inch FHD+ OLED screen (2,400 x 1,080), although the S10 Lite packs a Super AMOLED Plus display compared to the Galaxy Note 10 Lite’s standard Super AMOLED panel.

Another major shared feature is the 4,500mAh battery, and the fact that the capacity surpasses both the Galaxy S10 and Note 10 series is really welcome news.

What makes them different?

Left to right: Samsung Galaxy S10 Lite, Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Lite

The Galaxy S10 Lite differs from the Note 10 Lite in the power stakes though, offering 2019’s beefy Snapdragon 855 chipset as opposed to the Note 10 Lite’s 2018-era Exynos 9810 SoC. The Samsung chipset was previously seen in the Galaxy S9 and Note 9 series, but it theoretically lags behind the Snapdragon 855 (let alone the Snapdragon 865). In any case, both phones felt as snappy as their premium siblings in our brief time with them. Hopefully performance holds up when we get review units.

Another major difference between the Samsung Galaxy S10 Lite and Note 10 Lite is that the latter phone packs an S Pen, as you’d expect from a Note device. In fact, the Note 10 Lite S Pen experience felt just as good as the vanilla Note 10 S Pen experience, owing to the Bluetooth LE support. The Note also has a headphone jack, which is quite literally the opposite of what happened with the Note 10 and Note 10 Plus.

Let’s talk cameras. While the Note 10 Lite is less impressive in terms of sheer power, it might be the more flexible camera platform. The Note device packs three 12MP cameras on the rear, namely a standard sensor, 2x telephoto snapper, and an ultra-wide shooter.

Meanwhile, the Galaxy S10 Lite delivers a 48MP primary sensor, 12MP ultra-wide snapper, and 5MP macro sensor (no telephoto camera here). It’s also worth noting that the S10 Lite packs so-called Super Steady OIS on the primary camera, combining the previous Super Steady tech with OIS.

There’s no word on pricing for the Samsung Galaxy S10 Lite and Galaxy Note 10 Lite just yet, and Samsung has confirmed that the Note 10 Lite won’t be coming to the US. Nevertheless, the former phone will be available in Prism White, Prism Black, and Prism Blue. Meanwhile, the Note 10 Lite will be available in Aura Glow, Aura Black, and Aura Red.

Which phone would you pick? Let us know in the comments section!

India’s government allegedly fueled a bogus campaign to garner support by offering ‘free Netflix’

Last week, leaders of the ruling Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP)  of India tweeted out a toll-free number for people to call and show their support for the upcoming Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). However, later, several accounts – allegedly directed by the BJP – tweeted the same number, offering free Netflix subscriptions and hotlines to chat with ‘lonely women.’ For the uninitiated, CAA is an upcoming law that grants citizenship to non-Muslim refugees from select neighboring countries. Clubbed with the proposed National Register of Citizens (NRC), it poses a threat to minorities in the country. The introduction of this law has…

Acer ConceptD 7 offers plenty of power for creators

acer conceptd 7 ezel 23

Last year Acer introduced its ConceptD range of laptops, built with creators and designers in mind. Ahead of the official kickoff of CES 2020, Acer is back with several new ConceptD devices, as well as refreshed Spin laptops, a trio of new monitors, and two new TravelMate laptops.

Earlier today we spent some time with Acer’s latest, so let’s jump in and take a look at what’s new.

Acer Concept D7 Ezel and Ezel Pro

acer conceptd 7 ezel 22

The biggest announcement from Acer is the debut of the Acer ConceptD 7 Ezel, a convertible notebook that has a screen that can swivel, allowing you to use it in a variety of different ways. In addition to typical convertible viewing modes — like tablet, tent, and laptop views — you can also position the tablet portion upward so you can access the keyboard while still using the display as an easel (seen below.) And yes, the tablet does include a Wacom EMR digital pen designed for use on the 15.6-inch 4K IPS touchscreen display.

The design is fairly attractive, made of metal with a white coating that helps resist scratches and fingerprints. The laptop is designed for a very specific type of user (such as an architect or artist), but the actual design looks good and seems reasonably durable based on my short time with it. While the laptop is a bit heavy (around 3 pounds), there’s an incredible amount of power here.

Under the hood, you’ll find a brand new 10th-gen Intel Core H-Series processor, Nvidia RTX 2070 or 2080 graphics, up to 32GB of DDR memory, and storage up to a 2TB NVMe PCIe SSD. There’s a reasonable amount of ports too — two Thunderbolt 3 ports, an SD card slot, a DisplayPort 1.4 output, and an HDMI 2.0 port.

While the 7 Ezel is already a workhorse, those that need even more have the option of picking the Acer Concept D7 Ezel Pro. While the design is the same, the Pro model will offer an Intel Xeon processor, Nvidia Quadro RTX graphics, ECC memory support, and includes Windows 10 Pro.

In addition to the Concept D laptops, Acer showed off a Xeon E-powered ConceptD 700 workstation that is designed to address the needs of filmmakers, animators, engineers, and designers. The design stands out thanks to the top panel, which has a wood-like design and has a built-in wireless charging pad.

The Acer ConceptD 7 will launch in North America and Europe, though there are no specifics on the exact timeframe. The laptop will start at $2,699, with the Pro variant starting at $3,099. We don’t know the US pricing or release details for the ConceptD 700 workstation, but the desktop will be available in Europe in March starting at €1,699 (~$1,897.87.)

New Spin models

acer spin 3 1

Moving on from the ConceptD series, new versions of the Spin 5 and Spin 3 are also debuting at CES. Both laptops feature 10th-generation Intel Core processors and have a fast-charging Active Stylus with Wacom AES 1.0 technology. The Spin 5 also an upgraded option that features Wacom AES 2.0, which should result in a better writing/drawing experience.

For those that have a WiFi 6 compatible router, you’ll be happy to know both models offer support. The two Spin models generally offer very similar specs, but the screen and battery differ. The Spin 5 has a 13.5-inch 2K touch display and claims to provide 15 hours of battery life. The Spin 3 has a 14-inch HD display and Acer claims it can provide up to 12 hours of battery life (with support for fast-charging).

The Acer Spin 5 will arrive in the US in June starting at $899, while the Acer Spin 3 will arrive in April starting at $699.

Acer TravelMate P2 and P6

Acer also announced two new business laptops from its TravelMate series, the TravelMate P2 and P6.

The TravelMate P2 and P6 both feature 10th-gen Intel processors and comply with the MIL-STD-810G standard. They also both feature Nvidia GeForce processors, with the P2 packing an MX230 and the P6 offering a MX250.

The Acer TravelMate P2 features WiFi 6 and 4G LTE (nano-sim or eSIM), and claims to get up to 13 hours of battery life. There’s also Windows Hello facial recognition built-in.

acer travelmate p6 2

The TravelMate P6 is the sleeker and more expensive of the two. The P6 weighs just a little less than 2.5 pounds and is just .6-inches. It also offers instant wake and Wi-Fi 6 support. However, the most impressive feature is the battery — which reportedly offers up to 23 hours of battery life and can fast charge to 50% in roughly 45 minutes.

The Acer TravelMate P2 will first arrive to China and the EMEA this January. The P2 arrive to the US a little later in February, starting at $699.99. The Acer TravelMate P6 will arrive to China first, with a February launch for the US and the EMEA. The P6 will start at $1,149.99.

A trio of monitors

acer predator monitor 1

It wasn’t just new laptops, Acer also had three new monitors to show off. First, we have the Predator X32, which features Nvidia G-Sync technology, VESA DisplayHDR 1400 certification, and represents 99% of the Adobe RGB spectrum and 89.5% of the Rec2020 spectrum.

Next, we have the Predator CG552K, a 55-inch 4K OLED monster that’s Adaptive Sync and HDMI VRR (variable refresh rate) compatible. Lastly, the Predator X38 has a 37.5-inch 2300R curved UWQHD panel with VESA DisplayHDR 400 certification.

The new monitors will be priced $3559, $2999, and $2399 respectively.

That’s it from Acer. Does anything catch your eye? Let us know in the comments.

Xiaomi responds to Mijia camera security issue

Recently, an alarmed Xiaomi user reported an incident that the Mijia 1080p camera was able to capture photos and videos from strangers. This resulted in Google temporarily suspending its integration with Xiaomi's home products.
Google blocked Xiaomi’s integration with home products because of a security issue

The explanation behind the Xiaomi Mijia camera's glitch

The posted report stated that the consumer bought this brand new camera from AliExpress. There were still images and videos showing a baby sleeping on a crib, someone's porch, and a man sleeping in a chair.

To prove the issue, the user uploaded a short video showing camera footage streaming from their Xiaomi camera to their Google Home Hub. When the user tries to stream the camera footage, the Home Hub's screen malfunctions, with random images appearing irregularly on screen.

A Google spokesperson has responded over the issue by stating that they are communicating with Xiaomi to resolve it. But as of this moment, Xiaomi's integrations with Assistant and Google Home were blocked. It is still uncertain when their access will return.

On the other hand, Xiaomi has answered this issue with a statement that it happened because of a cache update on December 26, 2019. The updated is claimed to be designed to enhance camera streaming quality.

During the investigation, it was discovered that those around 1,000 users that were affected have exceedingly poor network connections. Also, this issue might have been prevented if the camera is linked to the Xiaomi's Mi Home app.

The Chinese tech giant suspended this service until the root cause has been completely addressed, to make sure that there will be no problems will occur again.

Xiaomi has always prioritized our users' privacy and information security. We are aware there was an issue of receiving stills while connecting Mi Home Security Camera Basic 1080p on Google Home hub. We apologize for the inconvenience this has caused to our users.

Our team has since acted immediately to solve the issue and it is now fixed. Upon investigation, we have found out the issue was caused by a cache update on December 26, 2019, which was designed to improve camera streaming quality. This has only happened in extremely rare conditions. In this case, it happened during the integration between Mi Home Security Camera Basic 1080p and the Google Home Hub with a display screen under poor network conditions.

We have also found 1044 users were with such integrations and only a few with extremely poor network conditions might be affected. This issue will not happen if the camera is linked to the Xiaomi’s Mi Home app.
Xiaomi has communicated and fixed this issue with Google and has also suspended this service until the root cause has been completely solved to ensure that such issues will not happen again.
