Xiaomi’s new wireless charging solution rivals Huawei’s wired charging

Wireless charging is generally slower than wired charging solutions, but we’ve seen some big leaps made in the last 18 months or so.

Xiaomi has been at the front of the pack when it comes to faster wireless charging, and it’s just raised the bar again by demonstrating 40W wireless charging. Vice-president Chang Cheng made the announcement on Weibo today, while also posting a time-lapse video to illustrate the speed. Check it out below.

The video shows a phone with a 4,000mAh battery hitting 50% capacity just under 20 minutes due to the faster charging solution. The Xiaomi device is fully topped up after just 40 minutes of 40W wireless charging.

This is a pretty big step for Xiaomi, as it puts the firm in line with wired charging solutions from the likes of Huawei. Huawei’s flagship Pro devices offer 40W wired charging solutions, capable of topping up a 4,200mAh battery in just over an hour. Xiaomi’s demonstration uses a smaller battery obviously, but it still seems extremely fast.

It’s one thing to demonstrate 40W wireless charging and another to actually implement it in a smartphone though. After all, Xiaomi showed off 100W wired charging late last year, but its Mi 10 Pro flagship tops out at 50W speeds. Then again, the Mi 10 Pro also offers 30W wireless charging, which suggests that a 40W wireless solution is closer to a commercial reality. So could we see this tech any time soon?

“We don’t have an availability timeline for commercial release to share as of now,” Xiaomi representatives told Android Authority in response to an emailed query. The representatives also confirmed that it tested the solution on a Mi 10 Pro, but stressed that it was still under development.

India will finally allow inflight Wi-Fi after all these years

Did you know that India and North Korea are the only two countries that don’t allow inflight Wi-Fi? It’s a shitty exclusive club to belong to — but it looks like India is finally canceling its membership, as the government has published new rules that allow the service on commercial flights. That’s from The Economic Times, which has reviewed a copy of the government’s notification. Quartz noted back in 2016 that while many international airlines offer Wi-Fi on board flights to India, they have to turn off connectivity when they enter the country’s airspace. It’s a particularly odd quirk, especially…

How to change your YouTube channel name

How To Change your YouTube name

A great YouTube channel name is almost as vital as the content itself. You want a punchy and easily searchable name to maximize views and subscribers. It’s important to know how to set up a YouTube channel name to get the full potential of your profile.

Successful rebrands can get people talking, but you have to know how to get started. Here are the steps you’ll need to update your channel name.

How to change your YouTube channel name:

1. Sign in to your YouTube channel. This is a fairly obvious first step, and it should take you right to your YouTube homepage.

2. Click on the Settings gear icon. This is on the dropdown menu in the top right corner of the page. You can find the Settings button in between the Language button and the Your Data on YouTube button.

5. Then just change your name! The steps aren’t too tricky, but make sure you have a good name ready to switch in.

What else should I know?

There are a couple of points to bear in mind when you change your YouTube channel name. The name on your channel is the same name that’s associated with your Google account, so if you change one you change them all. You are also only able to change your name three times in 90 days, so be careful before you get too crazy. Also, if your Google account is managed by your school or company, you may not be able to make changes.

What else can I do on YouTube?

Changing your YouTube channel name is just the tip of the iceberg. There are lots of other elements that go into building a successful channel, including themes, subscribers, video optimization, and more. If you’re really looking to make a run at becoming a content creator, you might want to grab a little bit of training first.
