Motorola Razr: Price and release date (Update: India price and availability)

Update, March 16, 2020 (4:10AM ET): Motorola has officially launched the Razr in India. We’ve updated the original article below with the Indian pricing and availability details for the foldable phone.

Original article, November 13, 2019 (11:16 AM ET): Motorola took the wraps off its very first foldable device this week: the Motorola Razr! The new smartphone joins the very limited selection of foldable devices launched this year, including the Samsung Galaxy Fold and the Huawei Mate X. However, the Motorola Razr price is much lower than those phones.

That doesn’t mean that the Razr is cheap! On the contrary, this is still a very expensive device, especially when you consider it has a much weaker spec sheet than the Mate X or the Galaxy Fold. Still, the design of the device is much different than those foldables and might be the practical product that will get people interested in the foldable future.

Motorola Razr release date

Motorola formally launched the Razr at an event in Los Angeles on November 13, 2019. The device looks just like the Razr phones from the early 2000s — in fact, folded in half, the device is as thin as the very first Razr phone from 2004.

Motorola is continuing its partnership with Verizon and offering the Razr as an exclusive on that carrier. Pre-orders for the Razr were scheduled to open on December 26, 2019, but Motorola later delayed that date due to high demand. It previously announced a general in-store availability beginning on January 9, 2020, but that date was also delayed.

The phone finally went up on pre-order in the US on January 27 and sales for the device started on February 6.

While it’s likely the device will eventually be available as an unlocked model, keep in mind that only Verizon customers will have access to the device in the United States at first.

Continue on to read about the Motorola Razr price and release dates in other countries around the world.

Motorola Razr US price and availability

On Verizon in the US, the Motorola Razr is priced at $1,499. You can either pay for the device outright or sign up for a payment plan and pay $62.49 per month for the next 24 months.

That price is a little lower than the Samsung Galaxy Fold, which starts at $1,980. It’s also significantly cheaper than the Huawei Mate X, which starts at €2,299 (~$2,529). However, since there’s just a Snapdragon 710 on board with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage, one wonders why the company couldn’t make the Motorola Razr price even lower than $1,500.

In comparison, Samsung’s new clamshell foldable — the Galaxy Z Flip — is priced at $1,380 and comes with a superior Snapdragon 855 Plus chipset. You can read our review of the Galaxy Z Flip here.

Motorola Razr UK price and availability

The Motorola Razr is also available in the UK through an exclusive partnership with EE. Customers in UK will have to shell out upwards of £2,000 (~$2,562) to buy the Razr on contract.

The cheapest EE plan for the Razr starts at £94 (~$120) for 24 months. For that you’ll get a mere 10GB of data per month and will have to shell out £100 up-front to purchase the plan. This way you end up paying £2,356 (~$3,018) for the phone over the course of the two-year plan.

Motorola Razr India price and availability

The Motorola Razr is priced at Rs 124,999 (~$1,687) in India. As part of an introductory offer, Citibank debit and credit card customers in India will be able to get a flat discount of Rs 10,000 (~$134) on the price of the phone.

The Motorola Razr is now up for prebooking on Flipkart and through select offline retail stores in India. The clamshell phone will go on sale starting April 2.

If you have already flashed an Open Beta on your OnePlus 7, you will receive this new build as an OTA. If you haven’t and would like to, you can refer to the official flashing instructions here.

Welcome to the OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7 Pro updates hub. Here, you’ll find everything you need to know about the latest Android updates for the two devices, including their current versions and when future updates are likely to arrive.

Both the 7 and 7 Pro run OxygenOS, OnePlus’ proprietary Android skin. OxygenOS is known for fast updates that come for a very long time, so be sure to bookmark this page and visit often.

Note the OnePlus 7 and 7 Pro sometimes receive updates at the same time. Also, note that the T-Mobile variant of the OnePlus 7 Pro might receive software updates at a later date.

OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7 Pro updates

  • Current stable version: Android 10
  • When will the OnePlus 7 and 7 Pro get Android 11? September 2020 (estimated)

The OnePlus 7 and 7 Pro launched on May 14, 2019, with the then-latest version of Android, Android 9 Pie. It’s expected both devices will receive at least two major Android updates in the future.

Unlocked variants of the two phones started receiving Android 10 in late September, though many users didn’t see the OTA for weeks after before OnePlus quietly shelved it due to a few pesky bugs. The rollout began anew in mid-October as OxygenOS version 10.0.1.

At the end of December, the Android 10 update for the T-Mobile variant of the OnePlus 7 Pro finally began rolling out. The update came in as Oxygen OS 10.0.1 and included the November 2019 security patch. Unlocked 7 Pro models are on Oxygen OS 10.3.0, although it’s not clear which features the T-Mobile update is missing, if any.

OnePlus has confirmed that the OnePlus 7 Pro 5G will eventually be upgraded to OxygenOS 10 — though users will have to wait until Q1 2020 to see it.

Right after the beginning of the new year, OnePlus released the latest Oxygen OS Open Beta 8 builds for OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7 Pro users. This update brought several bug fixes including touch screen optimizations and camera performance tweaks as well as the December security patch.

In mid-February, OnePlus released the Oxygen OS Open Beta 9 build and Oxygen OS 10.3.1 stable update for the OnePlus 7 Pro. Both updates include several bug fixes, tweaks, and January’s security patch.

In March, the OnePlus 7 Pro 5G was also updated to the stable version of Android 10. This exclusive version of Oxygen OS 10 landed as a 2GB+ download and its changelog was the same as the one for the OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7 Pro Android 10 update.

The pair are expected to see Android 11 in 2020. It’s possible that it will also receive an update to Android 12 in 2021, as the OnePlus 3T received three updates during its lifespan (to Nougat, Oreo, and Pie).

New Android ransomware poses as coronavirus tracking app

coronavirus tracker ransomware domaintoolsDomainTools

We’ve seen loads of coronavirus apps pop up on mobile app stores in recent months, as the pandemic continues to sweep around the world. Google has taken steps to remove the more questionable apps from the Play Store, but it looks like one Android app on the web is actually ransomware.

Security company DomainTools (h/t: SC Magazine) spotted ransomware called CovidLock that poses as a coronavirus tracking app. The app, which is available on coronavirusapp[.]site, prompts users to give accessibility and lockscreen permissions.

Unfortunately, the ransomware locks users out of their phones by adding a password to the device. The criminals behind CovidLock then urge victims to pay $100 in Bitcoin within 48 hours to regain access. Furthermore, they warn users that contacts, pictures, and other content will be deleted and social media accounts will be leaked.

covid 19 ransomware domaintoolsDomainTools

Thankfully, DomainTools says Android Nougat protects against this so-called screen-lock attack, but adds that you need to set a password on your phone for this protection to be effective. The security firm also says it’s reverse engineered the decryption keys for the ransomware and will post it publicly.

Otherwise, the company suggests that you stick to the Play Store for your app needs and only use resources from governments and health institutions.

“Cybercriminals like to exploit people when they are at their most vulnerable. They use dramatic events that cause people to be emotional or fearful to drive their profits. Any time there are major news cycles happening on a topic that stirs a strong reaction, cybercriminals will not be far behind,” the firm adds.

Huawei P40 series video teaser gives us tantalizing glimpses, little else

Huawei P40 series official teaser

The Huawei P40 series is set to launch late next week, and the firm has now published its first official video teaser for the new flagship family.

Huawei posted a video to Weibo, giving us a few brief looks at the P40 series. The clip shows us the previously seen camera bump, a side-mounted button (likely power or volume), and a curved screen. Those hoping for more official details here will be disappointed, but you can view the clip below:

Need more Huawei P40 series info in your life? Fortunately, dependable tipster Evan Blass has posted a leaked picture on Twitter, showing what seems to be all the major colorways. Check it out below.

The picture also seems to show three different models, with one model offering three cameras, another offering what appears to be four cameras, and the third variant delivering what could be five cameras. These devices are presumably the standard Huawei P40, the P40 Pro, and P40 Pro Premium Edition respectively.

We’re expecting to see a Kirin 990 chipset, a normal/wide/telephoto rear camera setup at the very least, along with a periscope camera for the more expensive models. Other supposed leaks point to a 52MP primary camera with an RYYB filter, as well as a 40MP ultra-wide snapper borrowed from the Mate 30 Pro. But with the official launch around the corner, we won’t have to wait long to confirm the specs.
