USD 1.23 billion fine for Apple

This is with regards to Apple preventing its distributors Tech Data and Ingram Micro from lowering their prices.

The verdict is a follow up to a complaint filed back in 2012 wherein a reseller complained that the wholesalers were scheming with Apple and not competing with each other.

Apple fined USD 1.23 billion over market tampering in France

Autorite de la Concurrence said that Apple was treating partners unfairly by limiting their supply including select Apple devices compared to its own stores. This combined with the lack of competition meant that pricing was identical across almost half of the retail market.

Apple says that the decision was disheartening and said that the company will file for an appeal. The company also said that the verdict relates to practices from over 10 years ago and ignores 30 years of legal precedent.

This is by far the biggest fine given by the Autorite de la Concurrence.

We hardly knew ye: Samsung is killing its game streaming service

Samsung PlayGalaxy Link and a Glap controller.Samsung PlayGalaxy

Game streaming services are all the rage today, and there are quite a few offerings available on the market. Samsung jumped on the bandwagon last year with PlayGalaxy Link, but it’s now announced that it will be discontinuing the service.

“After many difficult discussions, PlayGalaxy Link will be ended on 27 March 2020 due to internal policy changes,” read a notice on the PlayGalaxy website. “This will allow our development organization to more effectively focus its resources and add value to the next release of new product (sic).”

Samsung used technology developed by Parsec to enable game streaming from your PC to your Samsung device via Wi-Fi or cellular connection. But the Korean manufacturer is now directing people to the Parsec website if they’d still like to experience game streaming.

There’s no real shortage of game streaming options though, with GeForce Now, Project xCloud, Google Stadia, and Shadow all streaming games from a cloud server to your screen. And options like Steam Link and Nvidia GameStream allow you to stream games from your gaming PC to another device on your network. So Samsung clearly had its work cut out to successfully challenge established players in this arena.

Hopefully Samsung doesn’t give up on the third-party Glap gaming controller, promoted alongside PlayGalaxy Link for its devices. The controller is compatible with other Android phones as well, and offers support for Steam Link and Play Store titles. Then again, at $120 on Amazon, it certainly seems pricey compared to traditional telescopic controllers.

Motorola Edge Plus: Everything we know so far (Update: Leaked renders)

Motorola Edge Plus Evan BlassEvan Blass

Update, March 17, 2020 (3:40AM ET): We’ve updated the original article with new information about the design of the Motorola Edge Plus. Read on to see what the device looks like in leaked renders and images coming from trustworthy sources.

Original article, February 13, 2020 (9PM ET): Motorola hasn’t released a solid premium flagship competitor in several years. Motorola President Sergio Buniac announced in December that that would change in early 2020. We expect this will come in the form of the rumored Motorola Edge Plus.

Unfortunately, the company seems to have done a decent job of keeping leaks at bay, so there isn’t much we know about the device yet. For now, this is everything we expect from Motorola’s upcoming flagship.

Motorola Edge Plus: Name and design

We got our first real glimpse at the Motorola Edge Plus thanks to renders leaked by @OnLeaks and PriceBaba. The first thing you’ll notice in the renders (see image above) is one of 2019’s most polarizing features: a waterfall display.

This feature is likely one of the things that led to the device’s rumored Motorola Edge Plus name. It was previously thought that the device could come with the “Motorola One 2020” moniker, but it looks more likely that it’s the Motorola Edge Plus instead.

The renders also show a tiny display cutout for the selfie camera.

On the back of the phone, the renders suggest we’ll see a triple-lens camera array arranged in a vertically-aligned setup. Another set of images leaked by tipster Evan Blass show that there will be a 108MP primary sensor on the phone. You can see the images shared by Blass below.

Aside from that, we can also expect Motorola to include some of the other staple premium flagship design features we’ve come to expect from recent devices.

The back of the device does not have a fingerprint sensor, leading us to believe there could be an in-display fingerprint sensor on the phone. There’s also a possibility that the fingerprint reader is integrated with one of the buttons on the side, but that doesn’t look to be the case.

Furthermore, the leaked renders of the Motorola Edge Plus show a headphone jack at the top and a USB-C port at the bottom of the phone.

Motorola Edge Plus: Specs and features

We expect the Motorola Edge Plus to come with a 6.67-inch, 2,340 x 1,080 waterfall display. This display should run to the edges of the device, and it will most likely support a 90Hz display refresh rate. It’s also expected to come with Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 865, 8GB or 12GB of RAM, a 5,170mAh battery, a 108MP camera, and Android 10.

The device should also tout 5G support, and Motorola President Buniac said it would be the “fastest 5G phone on Qualcomm’s flagship platform” with “5G speeds greater than 5Gbps.” Other than that, we are unaware of the rest of the device’s hardware specs.

Motorola could take this opportunity to launch several new applications as well.

Software, on the other hand, is another story. Motorola could take this opportunity to launch several new applications with the phone, including Moto Edge Assistant, Moto Gametime, and Moto Audio.

Moto Edge Assistant will reportedly help users take full advantage of the new curved display. This app should allow them to tweak and customize tap actions on the edges of the screen.

Moto Gametime should introduce a customizable toolbar for users to easily access settings and other tools useful during gaming sessions. Some of these features could include notification blocking, brightness locking, and more. Users should be able to access this toolbar with a tap of a floating button or swipe in from one of the device edges.

Moto Audio should allow the Motorola Edge Plus to tune audio profiles to match specific types of content automatically. It could boost voice clarity during calls or increase the bass while you play music. This would be possible thanks to the various audio profiles for gaming, movies, music, and more.

Motorola Edge Plus: Price and release date

Motorola Moto One Zoom notch and earpiece speaker

We expected Motorola to announce the Motorola Edge Plus on February 23, a day ahead of the official start of Mobile World Congress 2020. Unfortunately, this year’s MWC event was canceled due to concerns surrounding the current coronavirus outbreak.

Motorola could therefore unveil the Edge Plus at any time within the next couple of weeks. We don’t know where the device will be made available, but we hope to see a global rollout with this handset.

In the US, the Motorola Edge Plus will most likely launch on Verizon’s mmWave 5G network. The carrier recently revealed in a press release that it was able to achieve multi-gigabit speeds on Motorola’s upcoming flagship smartphone. The only other information confirmed in the press release is that the phone is powered by the Snapdragon 865 chipset and features the Snapdragon X55 5G modem.

We haven’t heard any rumors on pricing yet either, but we expect this device will fall within premium territory. However, we don’t expect it to come anywhere near the new Galaxy S20 series or even Motorola’s new Razr foldable. It’s more likely that the device will fall somewhere between the $700-$900 price range, though that’s just speculation at this point.

Those are all the details we have on the Motorola Edge Plus so far! Be sure to bookmark this page and check back often as we will update it with new information as we get our hands on it.

Samsung producing UFS 3.1 storage, expected in flagships later this year

Samsung has started production of UFS 3.1 storage.Samsung

The UFS 3.0 storage standard has found its way into many high-end smartphones, such as the Galaxy S20 series, OnePlus’s 2019 devices, and the Xiaomi Mi 10 family.

Samsung is gearing up for the future though, and it’s announced that it’s now producing 512GB eUFS 3.1 storage. In fact, Samsung claims the new standard delivers three times the write speed of UFS 3.0 and breaches the 1GBps barrier.

“Phones with the new eUFS 3.1 will only take about 1.5 minutes to move 100GB of data whereas UFS 3.0-based phones require more than four minutes,” the company notes, adding that it’s also up to 60% faster than UFS 3.0 when it comes to random performance.

The manufacturer points to the new storage standard as being a boon for 8K videos and large size photos. And with the Snapdragon 865 flagship processor sporting 8K recording capabilities, support for 200MP cameras, and “unlimited” 960fps super slow mo, it certainly seems like faster storage is becoming a priority.

Samsung has confirmed that 512GB UFS 3.1 storage production is underway, and that it will also offer 128GB and 256GB options for “flagship smartphones that will be launched later this year.” In other words, it doesn’t seem unreasonable to assume that the Galaxy Note 20 and possibly the Galaxy Fold 2 will have this new storage standard.

How important is storage speed and/or size to you when buying a phone? Give us your thoughts below!
