These are (most likely) Fitbit’s new fitness trackers

This is the featured image for the best workout apps for Android

Last year, Google offered to buy Fitbit in a whopping $2.1 billion all-cash deal. While that acquisition is still not set in stone, Fitbit seems to be charging ahead with its first wearable launch of the year. Thanks to some sleuthing done by folks over at 9to5Google, we are almost certain that new Fitbit fitness trackers are on their way.

UK-based accessories store MobileFun has listed two models of a device called the Fitbit Charge 4 on its platform. It has also separately listed two silicone strap options for the new tracker. The listings details all the features of the alleged Charge 4 as well as pricing for its different variants.

Interestingly, the new fitness band has also appeared in an FCC listing with the same model number as the one mentioned in the retail listing. This tells us that the company might be on the verge of launching the new Charge 4 trackers.

Fitbit Charge 4 specs and pricing

The two models listed on MobileFun include a vanilla Fitbit Charge 4 and a Fitbit Charge 4 Special Edition. The good news is that both versions support NFC for Fitbit Pay this time around. 2018’s Fitbit Charge 3 was also sold in two variants: regular and special edition. However, only the pricier special edition sported NFC for around $20 more.

That said, the standard Fitbit Charge 4 is listed with a price tag of £139.99 (~$160). It is available for pre-order on the website in Black, Rosewood, and Storm Blue/Black colors. Meanwhile, the Fitbit Charge 4 Special Edition is listed at £159.99 (~$183) with a Granite colorway. The optional silicone strap is priced at £29 (~$33) in a Frost White color. Sadly, no product photos are available in any of the listings.

Other features on the new Charge 4 seem pretty consistent with what we saw on the Charge 3, such as a 24/7 pedometer, sleep tracking, IP68 water resistance, and Bluetooth connectivity. Looks like the new trackers will once again miss out on a dedicated GPS, so you’ll still have to carry your phone along on your runs.

Remember, there is still no official word from Fitbit on these new trackers so we can’t really be sure of the information coming from the listings. However, it’s been two years since the Charge series was updated so launching new devices only seems logical.

5G phones tipped to become truly affordable by the end of the year

vivo nex 3 5g 16

5G phones have been on the market for just over a year now, but we still haven’t seen a ton of mid-range devices with the new connectivity standard.

Now, Vivo vice-president Liu Hong has told ITHome (h/t: GSMArena) that 5G phones will be much cheaper later this year. In fact, Hong predicted that 5G phone prices will drop to roughly 1,500 yuan (~$212) by Q4 2020.

That’s a more aggressive prediction than we saw from companies we interviewed earlier this year. MediaTek and Qualcomm representatives told us that they saw $250 to $300 as the low point for 5G phone prices in 2020.

The ~$285 Redmi K30 5G is arguably the cheapest 5G phone right now, so it isn’t hard to imagine that prices will be even lower than that.

Chipsets are another factor too, as the Snapdragon 765 series is the only mid-range 5G silicon from Qualcomm right now. But the US giant has previously confirmed plans to bring 5G to its budget-focused Snapdragon 600 series, with devices set to arrive in the second half of 2020. And silicon in this series is usually found in sub-$300 devices.

It looks like price will no longer be a major obstacle when it comes to 5G phones by the end of the year. That just leaves 5G networks as the big hurdle, as the likes of India, South Africa, and other markets still haven’t rolled out mobile 5G networks.

How low do you think 5G phone prices will go by the end of the year? Give us your answer below.

Bill Gates: Coronavirus testing in the US is unorganized

Last night, Microsoft’s co-founder and the co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Bill Gates, held an AMA on Reddit to chat about COVID-19 pandemic. During the session, hehe stressed upon the need for a ‘shut down’ and the lack of extensive testing in the US. Gates said the CDC needs to have a central portal that lets people post their symptoms and get tested within 24 hours if needed: We need to democratize and scale the testing system by having a CDC website that people go to and enter their situation. Priority situations should get tested within 24 hours.…

You can support frontliners fighting COVID-19 and more using PayMaya QR
Just scan this QR code to donate

PayMaya QR for easy donations to Philippine Red Cross

The donations will allow PRC to provide critical humanitarian services such as medical assistance and relief operations in this time of need.

To help in this cause, all you need to do is scan the QR code we placed above to instantly make a donation straight to the Philippine Red Cross.

Apart from the QR method, PayMaya has also equipped the PRC with PayMaya One devices so they may be able to accept card and QR donations whenever they are in the field.

To recall, the entire country is busy fighting the COVID-19 pandemic using the community quarantine method. While this is for the safety of everyone, most in the marginalized sectors are left with little to no access to basic necessities and livelihood.

Also, the health workers along with other frontliners such as the volunteers, military, and police are risking their lives in order to help beat Coronavirus as well.

For sure, the next few weeks will be tough for them.

In these trying times, any help is help.

Stay safe everyone!
