Samsung to close all US, Canadian stores due to COVID-19

samsung galaxy s20 plus review samsung logo 2

The COVID-19 pandemic means that businesses have to take drastic measures, and Samsung is no different. The manufacturer has announced that it’s temporarily closing all Canadian and US stores in a bid to fight the coronavirus outbreak.

Samsung revealed the news on its Canadian and US websites (h/t: Android Central), confirming the temporary store closures as of March 17. Both divisions cited the need to protect employees and customers from COVID-19 in their statements.

It’s not all doom and gloom though, as the regional arms confirmed that their online stores and service teams will be available. Furthermore, the divisions added that orders will still be fulfilled, so you can buy that Galaxy S20 series phone if you really want it.

There’s no word on when these stores will be re-opened, but this uncertainty is expected given the circumstances. And you can almost certainly expect other tech retailers to temporarily close up shop if they haven’t done so already.

Xiaomi Mi 10 series pricing and availability (Update: India launch announced)

xiaomi mi 10 series 1

Update, March 19, 2020 (5:35AM ET): We’ve updated the Xiaomi Mi 10 price and availability guide with details about the India launch date of the phone. We’ve also added information about the wider global launch of the device. Read on for all the latest.

Original article, February 13 2020 (1:46AM ET): Xiaomi has officially taken the covers off the Mi 10 series, unveiling the Mi 10 and Mi 10 Pro. From a Snapdragon 865 processor and quad rear camera setup to 8K recording, big batteries and a 90Hz screen, there’s plenty to like about these phones.

When it comes to Xiaomi, however, pricing is one of the most important factors. So join us as we look at the Mi 10 series’ pricing and availability.

Mi 10 China details

The Xiaomi Mi 10 series first launched in China on February 13, and they’re already available to pre-order. The Mi 10 goes on sale from February 14, while the Mi 10 Pro hits shelves on February 18. You can check out Chinese pricing below.

  • Xiaomi Mi 10 8GB/128GB – 3,999 Chinese yuan (~$573)
  • Xiaomi Mi 10 8GB/256GB – 4,299 Chinese yuan (~$616)
  • Xiaomi Mi 10 12GB/256GB – 4,699 Chinese yuan (~$673)
  • Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro 8GB/256GB – 4,999 Chinese yuan (~$716)
  • Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro 12GB/256GB – 5,499 Chinese yuan (~$787)
  • Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro 12GB/512GB – 5,999 Chinese yuan (~$859)

The base Mi 10 price is actually ~$120 to $140 more than the Xiaomi Mi 9’s launch price, and the company has outlined several reasons for this increase. Essentially, it comes down to the Snapdragon 865 chipset, screen technology, RAM, and other factors.

Mi 10 India pricing and availability

Xiaomi’s Mi series flagships haven’t traditionally been available in India for the most part, but the company is bringing them to the country this year.

The Mi 10 will launch in India on March 31 at 12:30PM IST (3AM ET). Xiaomi will livestream the event across all its social media handles. Pre-orders for the phone will begin the same day as the launch at 3PM IST (5:30AM ET).

In a previous tweet discussing the Mi 10’s India launch, global vice-president Manu Jain noted that all units would have to be imported due to the lack of suitable manufacturing facilities in the country, saying it would therefore see a “different” [more expensive probably – ed] price model.

There’s no word on pricing and availability then, but Jain’s statement about a different pricing model suggests a phone more in line with the OnePlus series price than the Redmi K20 Pro.

Mi 10 global details

Xiaomi has delayed its Mi 10 series global launch after MWC 2020 was cancelled. The launch was set to take place in Barcelona on February 23, but has now been shifted to March 27.

If the Mi 9 series is anything to go by, then we can expect the European pricing in particular to be ~$100 more expensive than the Chinese pricing. For example, the 6GB/128GB Mi 9 launched €449 (~$560) in Europe, while the same model in China would set you back 2,999 Chinese yuan (~$445).

That’s it for our Xiaomi Mi 10 price and availability hub so far! We’ll keep you updated as availability and pricing is announced for various regions.

Oppo’s Realme sub-brand is launching its own sub-brand

Remember Inception, the Christopher Nolan movie that took us on a journey into a dream within a dream? That’s what the ‘sub-brand’ strategy adopted by today’s smartphone brands feels like lately. Today, Oppo‘s sub-brand, Realme, said it’s launching a new line of phones called Narzo in India. While the company hasn’t given out details about what you should expect from this new line of phones, 91mobiles noted that this is the company’s ploy to take on Xiaomi sub-brand spin-offs such as Redmi and Poco. It’s likely that the company will launch sub-$250 phones to compete in the budget segment — because…

Watch: OPPO Find X2 Pro First Camera Samples vs Huawei Mate 30 Pro

Since the new OPPO Find X2 Pro (PHP 65,990) is the new highest-rated camera phone at DxOMark, I immediately compared it with my trusty personal handset, the previous champ Huawei Mate 30 Pro (PHP 46,990).

Huawei Mate 30 Pro and OPPO Find X2 Pro

Based on camera specs, these two are both impressive

OPPO Find X2 Pro boasts a custom 48MP Sony sensor, another 48MP ultra-wide camera w/ 3cm macro, and a 13MP f/3.0 periscope camera with 5x optical zoom and up to 60x digital zoom.

Mate 30 Pro, on the other hand, is packed with the Leica 40MP main camera, 40MP ultra-wide Cine Camera, 8MP 3x optical zoom with 30x digital zoom, and 3D Depth Sensing Camera.

For selfies, the Find X2 Pro packs a 32MP f/2.4 Sony IMX616 camera. The Mate 30 Pro has a 32MP f/2.0 selfie cam with 3D Depth Sensing.

For videos, both can record up to 4K 60fps. But the OPPO shot is not that stabilized. You can't switch to the wide lens unlike the Huawei as well.

At 4K 30fps, it is a closer match. Both can do ultra-wide videos.

To activate OPPO's Ultra Steady Mode, you need to go down to 1080p.

For selfie videos, both can record up to 1080p 30fps. Sadly, no 4K.

Let's begin!

Quick thoughts

Overall, it is a close match. Both have advantages and disadvantages over each other. The Huawei Mate 30 Pro is still a very good flagship device that excels in both photos and videos. But, I have to give a slight edge on photos to the OPPO Find X2 Pro.

That's super impressive as OPPO said this is not yet the final camera software of the Find X2 Pro.
