Google Play Movies could soon let you watch hundreds of free movies

bad mobile phone

Google Play Movies is not like your traditional streaming service with a subscription model. Instead, it offers movies and TV shows to rent or purchase upfront. Only a select few titles are available for free on the service, but we hear that might change soon.

An APK teardown of the Google Play Movies & TV Android app, conducted by XDA Developers, revealed evidence that Google could soon introduce ad-supported movies on the platform. One string of code in particular refers to the availability of “hundreds of movies, just a few ads.”

This suggests that Google could be looking to expand the reach of Play Movies by offering free, ad-supported content, just like it does with YouTube.

There is no indication if Google will adopt this ad-based model for all the titles available on Play Movies, or if it’s meant only for select titles. There’s also no clarity on when this model will be implemented. However it’ll surely boost the adoption of the service and could make it a viable competitor to streaming services.

What do you think of Google Play Movies getting free content supported by ads? Will you use it more often if this happens? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.

77-year-old Spaniard fined for playing Pokemon Go amid coronavirus lockdown

A 77-year-old man from Spain thought it was a good idea to walk around and hunt Pokemon at a time when the entire country is on lockdown.

Spain’s COVID-19 death toll surpassed China’s on Wednesday, with over 3,434 dead due to the virus. Spanish authorities announced a two-week nationwide lockdown on March 14, but it could extend further as the situation evolves.

In the middle of this ballooning crisis, the 77-year-old was reportedly (h/t CNET) out and about in the Latina district of Madrid on Sunday. When officers from the municipal police approached the man, he told them that he was “hunting Pokemons (sic),” possibly while playing popular mobile game Pokemon Go.

Madrid police fined the man and tweeted a photo of his ticket on Monday. The tweet (translated) said: “Hunting Pokemon, dinosaurs, or any other magical creature is forbidden during the alarm state. Don’t make excuses.”

It seems the Spanish citizen isn’t the only one who wanted to catch ’em all. Last week, a 31-year-old man from Como, Italy was reportedly found roaming the streets with his daughter in search of Pokemon.

Meanwhile, Niantic — the maker of Pokemon Go — has urged players to stay at home during this pandemic. It has added multiple incentives and bonuses for playing the game from home, including the removal of a requirement to walk a certain number of steps. You can read Niantic’s coronavirus response here.

We hope none of you reading this article get any strange ideas like these. It isn’t safe to step out in public and being among large crowds is not advisable right now. Self isolation is the only way to keep yourself and others protected.

If you need some suggestions for stuff to do while you’re on lockdown, check out these articles below.

YouTube to default to 480P worldwide for a month

YouTube announced that it will default all videos to SD or 480p worldwide for a month.

YouTube defaults to SD for a month

This was first implemented in Europe when apparently networks can't handle all the people streaming at the same time since most people are staying at home to COVID-19 quarantine and restrictions.

This change will be rolling out in the next days and is projected to last for a month. However, the duration is not definite since we don't know if the situation will get better after the one month quarantine.

So, when you start a YouTube video, it will play at 480p SD resolution. No worries, you can still choose the resolution you want but you will always have to do this every single time.

YouTube believes that most people won't go through that procedure which will then relieve the pressure on networks.

What do you guys think?

Google’s nifty podcast app finally arrives on iOS, and it’s great for new listeners

It’s probably not the best time to launch a product, but this one can actually help people distract themselves during the lockdown. Google has brought its nifty podcast app to iOS — and yes, it’s free. The search giant first launched the app on Android in 2018. Google Podcasts supported playback on the web back then, but the company launched a proper website for it just last month. The new iOS app is the last piece of the puzzle. Getting around the app is quite easy, so I won’t bore you with a walkthrough of all the buttons and tabs in there.…

MIUI Camera code points to Redmi K30 Pro being next Poco phone

The Poco X2 could be followed by the Poco F2, based on the Redmi K30 Pro.

The first Poco phone since 2018’s Poco F1 was the Poco X2, a rebranded version of the Redmi K30. It therefore stands to reason that the Poco F2 will likely be a rebranded version of the Redmi K30 Pro.

Now, XDA-Developers has uncovered evidence that the Pro model is indeed the basis for a new Poco device. XDA member kacskrz dug through the MIUI Camera app in the latest MIUI 11 beta, discovering references to “lmi” and “lmiin.” The former is the code-name for the Redmi K30 Pro, according to the outlet, while the latter is presumed to be the code-name for the Indian version of the K30 Pro.

They were then able to find a reference to a “shot on Poco phone” watermark for the series, lending credence to the idea that the Redmi K30 Pro will indeed be a Poco device (presumably the Poco F2).

In case you missed it, the Redmi K30 Pro is a flagship-level phone with a 2,999 yuan (~$424) price tag. The phone features a Snapdragon 865 processor, 6GB to 8GB of RAM, and 128GB to 256GB of expandable storage.

The K30 Pro also offers a 20MP pop-up selfie camera, a quad rear camera (64MP, 13MP ultra-wide, 5MP telephoto macro lens, 2MP depth), and a 4,700mAh battery with 33W wired charging. Other notable features include a 3.5mm port, an in-display fingerprint sensor, and an OLED FHD+ screen (60Hz).

We can therefore expect the next Poco device to be more expensive than the ~$300 Poco F1 if it’s indeed based on the K30 Pro. But would you buy a Poco F2 if it’s pricier than the F1? Let us know below!
