Samsung Galaxy S20 series update brings improved camera, new security patch

Update, April 1, 2020 (2AM ET): Samsung isn’t stopping at just one camera-focused update, as the firm is reportedly pushing out another update that targets the camera experience.

SamMobile reports that Galaxy S20 series users in Hong Kong and Taiwan are receiving a 435MB update (build number: G98x0ZHU1ATCT). Furthermore, the changelog notes that you’re getting improved camera performance in general and the April 2020 security patch.

The outlet says that Samsung’s updates for these regions are often different from OTAs for the rest of the world, but we can nevertheless expect the April 2020 security patch at the very least.

Original article: Welcome to the Samsung Galaxy S20 update hub! Here you’ll find all the latest information on software updates for the Samsung Galaxy S20, Galaxy S20 Plus, and Galaxy S20 Ultra. We’ll tell you what the current software versions are for each device and also give you a heads up that new updates are rolling out.

Keep in mind that the Samsung Galaxy S20 updates usually roll out to all three devices at the same time. However, different variants of the devices — such as carrier-branded versions and unlocked versions — usually see updates at different times.

Samsung Galaxy S20 The latest and greatest from Samsung
The Samsung Galaxy S20, Galaxy S20 Plus, and Galaxy S20 Ultra are super-premium 5G smartphones from the South Korean company. No matter what you're looking for, the Galaxy S20 line likely has something to suit your needs.

Samsung Galaxy S20, S20 Plus, and S20 Ultra updates

  • Current stable version: Android 10
  • When will the Galaxy S20, S20 Plus, and S20 Ultra get Android 11?: December 2020 (estimated)

Samsung launched the family of Galaxy S20 phones on February 11, 2020. Pre-orders for the devices started on February 21 and the devices will land in stores on March 6. Every device in the family will launch with Android 10 out of the box (skinned over with Samsung’s One UI 2.0, of course).

Samsung has gotten much faster and more regular with software updates as of late. We saw the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy Note 10 families get Android 10 in record time for the OEM. As such, it’s reasonable to assume the launch of Android 11 will be even faster this year. Although we can’t make any promises, it’s likely the Samsung Galaxy S20 update to the newest version of Android will land before 2020 comes to a close.

Before the Galaxy S20 family of phones even hit store shelves, Samsung already began releasing its first update. According to Tizen Help, the update is rolling out to South Korean S20 Ultra devices, and it fixes a few camera issues while also delivering the March Android security patch. This means that when you take your Galaxy S20 Ultra out of the box on March 6, there will likely be an update waiting for you.

Verizon also began pushing out a pre-release update to its Galaxy S20 Plus and Galaxy S20 Ultra variants on March 2. The update is said to bring performance enhancements to both devices and it includes the March security patch.

Shortly after that, the entire T-Mobile Galaxy S20 line began receiving the March security patch too. The update started rolling out while some lucky customers got their devices a few days ahead of the official March 6 launch date.

A second pre-release update was also rolled out to the Galaxy S20 phone. It brought further improvements to the camera performance and overall user experience, including enhanced touch gestures.

Following the release of the S20 series, Samsung sent out a firmware update to the Exynos variants of the phones. The update brought a new version of the camera app (10.0.01.98) to all three Galaxy S20 phones. It also fixed the slow autofocus problem some users were facing on the new flagships. The Snapdragon models gained this update a few weeks later, bringing an improved camera experience too.

Here are the current stable versions of each device in the Galaxy S20 family:

DOLE will provide cash assistance during the lockdown crisis

Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III said Tuesday that Filipino workers with less or no income because of the pandemic can avail of the cash assistance. Previously, the government agency is pushing employers to submit avail the aid for their employees by submitting their payroll.

However, the labor department received reports that there are employers who did not want to comply with the payroll submission requirement. Labor Assistant Secretary Dominique Tutay said it can be due to the fact that the payroll could show if an employer is not paying the correct wage.

According to Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III last Tuesday, affected workers can head straight to DOLE to apply for cash assistance. He further explained during a virtual press briefing,
We advise the worker na sabihan 'yung mga kasamahan niyang worker na sila na lang mag-submit sa amin. Tapos ipapadala na lang namin ito [via money remittance]. Di na namin ipapadaan sa employer.

Micro, small, and medium enterprises with 200 workers and below will be put in priority during the application process. The submission has no deadline while individual applicants will be assisted on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Under the Bayanihan to Heal As One Act, the subsidy amount will depend on the daily minimum wage. Below is the table of the complete breakdown per region.

Build/DesignOPPO Find X2 Pro has 2 versions in terms of design. First, it has a Ceramic Black version with a new grating texture design made out of composite zirconia.

DisplayOPPO Find X2 Pro has a 6.7-inch 3D curved Gorilla Glass 6 protected Super AMOLED screen with 3168 x 1440 QHD+ resolution, 120Hz refresh rate, HDR10+, and 519 ppi pixel density.

OPPO takes ahead here since it is the first device to have a 120Hz screen at 2K resolution. Yes, Galaxy S20 Ultra has 120Hz as well but only at 1080p+.

Specs - OPPO Find X2 Pro is packed with the 4G version of 2.84GHz Snapdragon 865 octa-core processor, Adreno 650 GPU, 12GB LPDDR5 RAM, 512GB UFS 3.0 storage, and a 4,260mAh battery with 65W SuperVOOC 2.0 flash charge.

In PH, the S20 Ultra only has 12GB RAM and 128GB storage. 128GB is considered as TINY for a phone with PHP 69,990 price tag.

These are some of the best specs in the market today.

OPPO Find X2 Pro has a better CPU and GPU but Samsung Galaxy S20 Pro has a bigger RAM and battery.

In addition, Samsung Galaxy S20 Pro has wireless charging while OPPO doesn't. OPPO has a more powerful fast charging solution at 65W.
Triple-cam

For selfies. it has a 40MP f/2.2 sensor.

S20 Ultra has up to 8K video support while Find X2 Pro has up to 4K 60fps.

Going strictly by numbers, Samsung takes the lead with 4 cameras and a 108MP sensor.

However, you cannot underestimate OPPO's high-rated cameras at DxOMark. Our initial shots for our upcoming photo comparison show that it is just as good as the S20 Ultra.

Other features - OPPO Find X2 Pro has dual-band WiFi, 4G LTE, Bluetooth 5, OTG, FM Radio, NFC, GPS, A-GPS, GLONASS, In-Display fingerprint sensor, face unlock, stereo speakers, Dolby Atmos, Hi-Res audio, triple-mic, USB-C.

The Find X2 Pro in PH doesn't have 5G out of the box. Meanwhile, Galaxy the S20 Ultra is 5G ready.

OPPO Find X2 Pro advantages - More premium body, faster performance, better 120Hz 2K display, faster charging, bigger storage, more affordable price tag
Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra advantages -  Larger battery capacity, 5G ready, wireless charging, bigger camera sensors

Our thoughts

Both the OPPO Find X2 Pro and Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra have up-to-date designs, great screens, powerful cameras, and monster specs.

They are equally good on paper, but the Find X2 Pro has the more premium body, better screen, speedier chip, larger storage, and faster charging for less.

Meanwhile, the S20 Ultra could be the one for those in need of a bigger display, 5G connectivity, and the bragging rights of having a 108MP camera.

What do you guys think?
