Apple Shares Worksheet With 30 iPad Activities for Kids

Apple's education team today debuted 30 activities for kids and families to do as part of an ongoing effort to support at-home learning while many schoolchildren are completing classes remotely.

Available as a PDF that can be downloaded or printed, the suggestions include a wide range of activities that can be done using the built-in features of an iPad or iPhone.

Some of the activities include capturing a time-lapse video, going on a photo walk, recording a news interview, personalizing a portrait, seeing color in slo-mo video, and emojifying a mood. The PDF features a different activity for each number, each of which can be clicked for an activity description. For the photo walk activity, for example:
Pick a color or letter of the day and take photos around the house and yard of things that are that color or start with that letter. Then put them together in a collage or video. Try to make a rainbow or complete the alphabet!

Get started: Add the photos of each color or letter to a slide in the Keynote app. Or add each photo to Clips and record your voice saying the colors or letters.
According to Apple, these activities are aimed at children from pre-kindergarten to second grade, but can be tailored to suit the whole family.

Apple has also been supporting at-home education with a series of remote learning videos that are designed to help schools and educators use the built-in features of their devices to enable remote learning.

Report: iOS 14 will let you try out apps, no install required

Apple is apparently working on a way for iPhone users to use the features of apps without having to install them in its next iteration of iOS. In theory, you would be able to scan a QR code that allows you temporary access to the app — say for watching a video or looking at a social media post. The feature was spotted by 9to5Mac, who found it in code within an early iOS 14 build. The new API is codenamed “Clips,” which confuses me only slightly because Apple had a video-editing app by that same name a few years…

Samsung Galaxy Note 20, Fold 2 could launch on schedule despite COVID-19

samsung galaxy note 10 plus star wars edition s pen 2

Samsung’s next set of flagships — the Galaxy Note 20 and Fold 2 — are on schedule to launch at an event in August, as reported by The Korea Herald.

At a time when tech companies are suspending events owing to the coronavirus outbreak, Samsung could launch the new phones through a possible online launch event.

“Preparations are underway for the upcoming Galaxy Note launch, and there is no delay,” an industry insider told The Korea Herald. “But regarding a physical event, things are yet to be discussed, we are considering measures likes an online event,” the person added.

The publication reports that unlike rival Apple — whose employees are working from home — Samsung’s mobile business employees are all working out of their offices and things are proceeding on schedule.

Meanwhile, a separate report from SamMobile claims that the rumored Galaxy Fold 2 will have a lower entry price compared to the $1,980 Galaxy Fold.

To achieve this, Samsung will reportedly halve the internal storage on the base model of the phone from 512GB to 256GB. Looks like Samsung has learned a lesson in pricing foldables after its $1,400 Galaxy Z Flip received a positive response from customers.

Galaxy Fold 2, Galaxy Note 20 rumored specs

In terms of specs, the Galaxy Fold 2 is rumored to feature the same primary camera setup as the Galaxy S20 Plus. It’s also expected to come with the Snapdragon 865 chipset, and a new form of the S-Pen. Meanwhile, there’s conflicting information on whether it’ll arrive with an under-display camera or not.

As far as the Galaxy Note 20 is concerned, we saw an early design leak for the phone back in March. We haven’t seen any other credible leaks about the phone and Samsung hasn’t even confirmed its existence. However, if the Galaxy Note 10 series is anything to go by, we don’t expect any radical differences in the Note 20 phones compared to the existing S20 series.

We’ll update you about Samsung’s plans as and when we get some more concrete information. Until then, if you’re planning to buy a premium Samsung phone, you can check out our reviews of the Galaxy S20, S20 Plus, and S20 Ultra flagships.

Huawei has lost at least $60 million on Mate XS foldable

Huawei Mate Xs review open mode standing

Huawei launched its Mate X foldable phone at MWC 2019, following up with the Mate XS in February this year. The latter foldable has enjoyed a wider launch of sorts, but the firm has reportedly revealed that it’s still making a hefty loss on the device.

Huawei consumer group CEO Richard Yu told media in China that even though the Mate XS retails for an eye-watering 16,999 yuan (~$2,408), the firm has lost between $60 million and $70 million. This is despite earlier claims that the phone is seeing high demand, suggesting that the company is willing to swallow losses to encourage foldable adoption.

“After the cost of the folding screen is reduced, it is possible to make a profit, not just the selling price (sic),” the CEO was quoted as saying by ITHome and MyDrivers.

It really makes you wonder how much the Mate XS would cost if the company was trying to make a profit right out of the gate. But the silver lining is that the price of foldable phone components is expected to come down over time as production and development matures.

In fact, the Huawei executive previously stated that it’ll take roughly two years for foldable phones to have the same price as traditional smartphones. Yu also claimed at the time that they were losing money on foldables, so this latest news gives a good idea of just how much they’re losing.
