Viral sensation Remove China Apps pulled from Play Store

Remove China Apps

A new app called Remove China Apps went viral in India over the past week, becoming the top free app in the market. Now, it turns out that Google has taken action by pulling the app from the Play Store.

The app, which was downloaded over five million times, has been pulled because it violated the Play Store’s Deceptive Behavior Policy, according to TechCrunch. It seems like Remove China Apps fell afoul of the section regarding deceptive setting changes.

More specifically, Google says it doesn’t allow apps that mislead users into uninstalling or removing third-party apps/features. This section also specifically bars apps that “encourage or incentivize” users into removing third-party apps and features unless it’s a security app.

Remove China Apps scans your phone’s list of apps and alerts you to any China-made apps on your device. The app also gives you the option of quickly deleting any offending apps. Presumably this latter feature is what caused Google to take action.

It’s not a complete surprise to see Remove China Apps pulled from the Play Store, as we initially noted that Google prohibits apps from interfering with other apps. Nevertheless, the removal of such a popular app is bound to provoke a response from many Indian users.

Android 11 won't have the fatal wallpaper bug anymore

A few days ago, a certain wallpaper trended for potentially bricking your smartphones. Now, an explanation came out on why this happened.

No more wallpaper bugs in future Android versions?

Solutions vary depending on the extent of your phone's damage. Users were able to change the wallpaper in between crashes, some deleted the wallpaper via recovery tool TWRP, but most were forced to do a factory reset,

The issue is not a new bug in Android 10 as it was also seen over the years on different devices. A month ago, there was also a report on Pixel devices experiencing a similar problem when running the Google Wallpapers app.

What exactly happened?

Speculations point to Android's color space support which the image exceeds. Davide Bianco, one of the lead developers of POSP custom ROM, provided his own take and explained the issue.

According to him, the main issue is that Android SystemUI only handles sRGB images for wallpapers. However, it does not have any check against non-sRGB wallpapers which can lead to a crash in the ImageProcessHelper class since a variable goes beyond its bounds.

The variable is called y which represents the sum of the current scanned pixel RGB values. The pixel is obtained from scanning every row and column of the greyscaled picture surface. The variable y usually maxes out at 255.

If it goes over 255 it generates an out of bounds exception which Android SystemUI treats as fatal which then led to an infinite loop of crashes every time SystemUI starts.

The report claimed that Android 11 won't have this issue anymore since it always converts any image to sRGB before it gets processed.

Practice caution and don't use the wallpaper

Now that this bug was outed expect people to use it for pranks or malicious intent. Be careful and avoid using this wallpaper.

PLDT, Smart can afford Hyun Bin and major network upgrades at the same time

Major telco player PLDT has the financial clout to both invest billions of pesos to strengthen its core, while still tapping A-list celebrities to boost its market reach.

PLDT has the money to afford network upgrades, Hyun Bin

After announcing South Korean star Hyun Bin as the new face of its wireless arm Smart Communications' latest campaign "Simple, Smart Ako", PLDT surely received a bashing from many netizens criticizing its services, saying the group must solely focus on its network upgrades.

But they are doing it, shelling out billions of pesos every year to support its network infrastructure buildup.

Just for this year alone, PLDT is spending a whopping PHP 63 billion, a bulk of which has been earmarked for its network and information technology projects.

Here's what PLDT Chief Revenue Officer and Smart President and CEO Alfredo S. Panlilio had to say in late May:

Over the last five years, we have spent PHP 260 billion in Capex, and that has made us very capable of serving our customers during this pandemic. In the end, our objective really is to serve our customers, make sure their experience is good. We have sustained that during these very stressful times, he said.

Back in Q1 2020, Smart claimed that the company has boosted the number of its 4G/LTE base stations to 26,000, 6 percent higher from end-2019.

PLDT also added that its fiber infrastructure, which supports Smart’s network by providing high-capacity links to LTE base stations, is now at 338,500 kilometers nationwide, 5 percent more than end-2019, and up nearly 40 percent from end-2018.

So what seems to be the problem?

While it is true that the local telco sector, not just PLDT, is currently experiencing challenges in rolling its network due to the health crisis, both Pangilinan-led firm and Globe Telecom have long been facing red tape issue.

Globe even said before that the company needed at least 20 permits to build a single cell site.

The Philippines has only less than 20,000 towers nationwide, and the Department of Information and Communications Technology previously said we at least need 50,000 towers.

Until the issue on the said bureaucracy problem is resolved, Philippine telco services may continue to be compromised.
