Is this the Mi Note 11? Xiaomi could be readying phone with 12x optical zoom

The Xiaomi Mi Note 10 could get a sequel in the Mi Note 11 or Mi CC10 Pro.

The Xiaomi Mi Note 10 was one of the more feature-packed phones in the last 12 months, offering two zoom lenses, a 108MP main camera, and a big battery.

Now, tipster Xiaomishka reports that Xiaomi is working on a phone codenamed “CAS” that could be the Mi CC10 Pro or Mi Note 11. And it’s reportedly packing similarly impressive camera specs.

For starters, the leaker says the Xiaomi phone will offer a 12x optical zoom periscope camera, with 120x digital zoom. Huawei’s P40 Pro Plus currently offers a 10x optical zoom camera, so Xiaomi’s effort could be more impressive on paper. But it’s also worth noting the firm previously used a 3.7x 8MP camera and cropped in to give what it initially branded as 5x optical zoom on the Mi Note 10. It’s therefore entirely possible that Xiaomi is doing something similar here with this periscope camera if this leak is correct.

Furthermore, Samsung’s Galaxy S20 Ultra shows us that 100x digital zoom is pretty useless. So we’d expect 120x digital zoom to be similarly disappointing if Xiaomi adopts it.

Xiaomishka also reports that the phone will pack a 108MP main camera with a Samsung HM2 camera sensor. The firm used the HMX camera sensor for the Mi Note 10 and Mi 10 series, while the S20 Ultra used the HM1 sensor that was capable of nona-binning.

The tipster suggests that this could be the Xiaomi Mi CC10 Pro, being a follow-up to the Mi CC9 Pro. The latter phone is known as the Mi Note 10 in global markets, so it’s possible the Mi CC10 Pro could be the Mi Note 11. Hopefully it comes in at a similar price to the previous model if it’s indeed a successor, with the Mi Note 10 retailing for ~$440.

Finally, the leaker says the new Xiaomi device will pack an unannounced Snapdragon 775G chipset, 5G, and NFC, and will launch in July. That seems like an awfully quick turnaround time between generations, spanning eight months.

Germany orders all fuel stations to provide electric charging points

Germany is not just boosting subsidies to improve public interest in electric vehicles, it’s also pushing infrastructure improvements too. Last night, Reuters reports that the German government has asked all petrol and diesel filling stations to also offer electric vehicle charging. The move comes as part of the country’s €130 billion ($146 billion) economics recovery plan. [Read: Germany to give citizens up to $10K towards a new electric car — doubling its subsidy] According to BDEW, Germany’s association for the energy and water industry, the country had more than 27,700 EV charging points as of March. A step-by-step guide to becoming a better engineering manager

The typical job description for many engineering manager roles is action-packed. It is a mix of hands-on coding, technical leadership and decision making, process and project management, product oversight, people management, finding and hiring talent… the list goes on. In our work, we deal with both technical and people systems: we support individual engineers’ growth; help teams become successful; and make the organization more productive, functional, and innovative. Above all, an engineering manager is a service or support role across these various layers. Perhaps most fascinating and difficult is the high-level of ambiguity that comes with engineering management. Many problems…

Dropbox is testing a new password manager app

Dropbox has quietly released a test version of its upcoming password manager on Google Play Store and Apple App Store. However, the app is in beta stage, and you can only log in if you have an invite. The Android app was first spotted by sleuths at Android Police, and we managed to find a version for iOS as well. But the company hasn’t made a formal announcement yet. Google Camera 7.4 brings handy video-focused tweaks

The Pixel 4 gets better video zoom with Google Camera 7.4.

The Google Camera app has made some impressive strides over the years, bringing several major features to the table. Now the Google Camera 7.4 update has reportedly been released on the Play Store, and it packs a few neat (albeit not game-changing) additions.

The new update (7.4.104.313422365), spotted by 9to5Google, brings an easier way to switch to 4K video resolution on Pixel phones. Previously, users had to dive into the camera settings menu and select the desired resolution here. But now, you can simply hit the arrow in the viewfinder and the 4K video resolution toggle will be available in the resulting pop-up window.

It’s worth noting that the legacy option to change frames per second is still present in this window, but disappears when you choose 4K.

This isn’t the only addition to Google Camera 7.4, as the update also lets you zoom in up to 8x while recording video on the Pixel 4 (up from 5x). It’s believed that this change is helped by the fact that the Pixel 4 offers a 2x telephoto camera.

For what it’s worth, I wasn’t able to install this latest version of the app from the Play Store on my Pixel 4. But the update I installed (version 7.3.021.300172532) does indeed offer 8x zoom.

XDA-Developers also dug into the new version’s code and found hints at support for the Pixel 4a and Pixel 5. This is to be expected of course, thanks to numerous Pixel 4a leaks and Google traditionally launching a top-tier Pixel phone in October each year.
