Microsoft might buy TikTok — here’s what’s going on

To ban or not to ban? That’s the question President Donald Trump has been thinking about when it comes to TikTok. However, a third potential outcome has emerged over the weekend: Microsoft buying Tiktok. A US company investing into the short video app doesn’t come as a surprising move. Bytedance has been thinking of selling TikTok to US investors to ward off security concerns for a while. And Microsoft, which doesn’t have any competing social media products, seems to be the perfect contender. The Seattle-based company’s name as a TikTok buyer emerged on Friday while Trump was mulling to sign…

Xiaomi announces August 11 virtual event, could launch ‘several new phones’

Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro in hand profile

  • Xiaomi’s CEO Lei Jun will give a 10th anniversary speech next week.
  • The company might announce “several new phones” on the day.
  • Xiaomi could also unveil a new device in the Mi 10 series.

Xiaomi was founded back in 2010 and has a special 10th anniversary event planned for next week. To celebrate its decade-long run, Xiaomi has announced that its CEO Lei Jun will be delivering a special virtual address on August 11 at 7:30AM ET.

As per Xiaomi’s teaser for the event, Jun will discuss the company’s past, present, and future in his keynote speech, but rumor has it that the company will also reveal some new devices on the same day.

According to popular leaker Digital Chat Station, Xiaomi will announce “several new phones” and other “new products” on August 11, including a new phone in the Mi 10 series.

What will Xiaomi launch?

We haven’t heard a lot about upcoming Xiaomi phones, but there are some rumored devices that have been doing the rounds online.

There’s the alleged Redmi K30 Ultra which is expected to carry the MediaTek Dimensity 1000 chip and a 144Hz display. We also heard about two phones code-named Gauguin and Gauguin Pro, said to offer 64MP and 108MP main cameras respectively.

Rumors of a Xiaomi phone with 120W fast charging, a Snapdragon 865 series chipset, and 5G connectivity have also been floating around since last month. Given that Oppo, Vivo, and Realme have already announced their respective 120W and above charging solutions, Xiaomi shouldn’t be trailing too far behind.

As for the new Mi 10 model, word has it that it’ll come to market as the Mi 10 Pro Plus but there’s no real evidence to back this up. We also don’t know much about the other new products that the company might launch next Monday, but there’s been talk of a Redmi smartwatch so we might get a glimpse of that at the event.

Another mid-range OnePlus phone could be on the way, packing SD 690 (Update)

The Nord could be followed by a OnePlus phone with a Snapdragon 690 SoC.

Update, August 3, 2020 (2:53AM ET): A new “leak” of OnePlus’ possible budget device has broken cover. The leak itself, coming from tipster Max J (via Phonearena), doesn’t provide any specifications or feature additions but does suggest we can expect as many as two ‘Billie’ devices to arrive.

The tipster also posted renders of the devices based on their “imagination,” which he believes could be “very close to the actual phones.” Although they take design cues from the OnePlus Nord, we’d take that with a handful of salt.

Original article, July 29, 2020 (2:17 AM ET): OnePlus has just launched the Nord, marking the firm’s first mid-range smartphone in a long time. However, it looks like the company could be working on yet another budget phone.

XDA-Developers dug into Oxygen OS 10.5 for the Nord and discovered references to “SM6350” products in the settings APK file. More specifically, SM6350 is the part number for the recently launched Snapdragon 690 5G processor.

This chipset is the first 5G SoC in Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 600 series, while also packing an octacore design (2x Cortex-A77 and 6x Cortex-A55) and a graphical boost of up to 60% over the Snapdragon 675. You’re also getting sub-6Ghz 5G rather than the faster but more temperamental mmWave standard.

Furthermore, the team also found references to an upcoming phone code-named ‘Billie,’ along with four corresponding model numbers. These model numbers are BE2025, BE2026, BE2028, and BE2029. This doesn’t necessarily mean there’ll be four separate models, the outlet notes. But it could theoretically refer to slightly different SKUs or regional variants.

XDA-Developers also believes that the code-name of Billie could refer to musician Billie Eilish, as OnePlus purportedly used the internal codename of Avicii for the Nord (after the late Swedish DJ).

This wouldn’t be the first time we heard about a supposed OnePlus phone with a Snapdragon 690 processor either. A Geekbench listing for a OnePlus phone purportedly packing this chipset surfaced earlier this month, but these benchmarks are notoriously easy to spoof. Nevertheless, this latest news combined with the Geekbench listing featuring the model number BE2028 suggest that there’s another device in the works.

OnePlus also previously confirmed to Android Authority that the US would be getting “future products in the Nord line.” So it’s entirely possible that the aforementioned phone is the one the US will get. I guess we’ll just have to wait for OnePlus to incessantly tease the phone.
