WhatsApp might finally sync your chats between iOS and Android

One of the things people worry about when switching from Android to iOS or vice versa is syncing their WhatsApp chat logs — it simply doesn’t work nearly as well as when you’re moving to a new device on the same platform. There are a few apps that claim to do it, but they’re all hit or miss. However, WhatsApp might be finally working on letting you sync chats between platforms. According to a post by WABetaInfo, the company has started working on the feature in the background. The post notes that this is baked into functionality that will let you…

Qualcomm wants the green light to sell 5G chips to Huawei

Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 in plastic case

  • Qualcomm is reportedly lobbying the US government to let it sell chips to Huawei.
  • The chips are meant to be used in Huawei’s 5G phones.
  • Qualcomm says MediaTek and Samsung stand to benefit if the US doesn’t act.

The US trade ban against Huawei has dramatically affected the manufacturer’s chipset supply, with chipmaker TSMC barred from producing the manufacturer’s own HiSilicon Kirin processors. This action has reportedly resulted in Huawei stating that the upcoming Mate 40 series flagships would be the last with in-house Kirin processors. This would mean that the Chinese brand needs to source high-end chipsets from another company instead.

Now, it has emerged that Qualcomm is lobbying the US government to let it sell chips to Huawei that would go into the Chinese brand’s 5G phones, the Wall Street Journal reported.

According to a presentation viewed by the outlet, Qualcomm says the US trade ban against Huawei won’t stop it from obtaining necessary parts for its 5G phones. This would therefore mean that the US chipmaker loses out on as much as $8 billion a year that would go to its foreign rivals instead, it reportedly claimed.

“If Qualcomm is subject to export licensing, but its foreign competitors are not, US government policy will cause a rapid shift in 5G chipset market share in China and beyond,” the San Diego company was quoted as saying.

So just who are these foreign competitors then? Well, the US chipmaker says MediaTek and Samsung stand to benefit from the ban, according to the Wall Street Journal.  In fact, several reports note that Huawei is turning to MediaTek in a big way in 2020.

A successful deal between Huawei and Qualcomm wouldn’t be the first time Qualcomm supplied the Chinese brand though. Prior to the US trade ban, Huawei made extensive use of the US firm’s wares in its budget phones. However, a successful deal for flagship silicon would seemingly be a first for the two firms, as Huawei has used Kirin-branded SoCs since 2013’s Ascend P6 at the very least.

There’s no guarantee of a deal for Qualcomm’s flagship or 5G silicon if the US government gives it a green light though. The Chinese brand has made a concerted effort to source as many components as possible from non-US firms, although it has resumed dealing with Qualcomm for some components and a patent agreement.

In any event, it’s clear that the US trade ban against Huawei could backfire against at least one US firm rather than help it.

On November 15, 2019, OnePlus began rolling out Oxygen OS 10.0.6 for the OnePlus 7T. The update brought optimizations to standby power consumption and the expanded screenshot feature. It also improved Bluetooth connectivity in cars.

Meanwhile, the OnePlus 7T Pro received the Oxygen OS 10.0.4 update. GSMArena spotted the 166MB update, which brought the security patch of the phone up to October 2019. It also optimized standby power, Bluetooth, and expanded screenshots just like the OnePlus 7T update. OnePlus also fixed the black bar issue while charging or playing a video.

In addition, both phones got general bug fixes and stability improvements.

In December, OnePlus rolled out Oxygen OS 10.0.7 for the OnePlus 7T and Oxygen OS 10.0.05 for the OnePlus 7T Pro. The new updates improved the launch speed of some apps, optimized RAM management, fixed black and white screen issues, and updated the Android security patch to November, 2019.

More recently, February 2020 brought Oxygen OS 10.0.7 (EU and global) and 10.3.1 (India) for OnePlus 7T Pro. This brought the January 2020 security patch, bug fixes, and several other minor tweaks.

In March, the OnePlus 7T and 7T Pro got their first Open Beta update. The update brought the February 2020 security patch, better RAM management, and several fixes. But the biggest addition was that of Live Caption, following in the footsteps of the Google Pixel series and Galaxy S20 family.

The second Open Beta followed late in March, bringing the March 2020 security patch, Instant Translation feature, and improved Adaptive Brightness.

Shortly after that, the OnePlus 7T Pro McLaren 5G received the Oxygen OS 10.0.31 stable update. The update rolled out to the T-Mobile variant, and it included 5G enhancements, the March security patch, and other general bug fixes.

We also saw the Open Beta 3 for the OnePlus 7T series land on May 15, bringing dirty lens warnings for the camera, 4K recording via the ultra-wide shooter, and 960fps video. It also packed the April 2020 security patch. The Open Beta 4 update arrived on May 21, fixing a few issues and packing the May 2020 security update.

We recently saw OnePlus push out the Open Beta 4 update to the OnePlus 7T series on May 28. The Oxygen OS 10.3.3 update for India and Oxygen OS 10.0.11 update for global devices was spotted by XDA-Developers and brings a few notable features. Some of the more prominent additions here include 960fps recording, the Epic Games store in the Game Space on Indian devices, and Dolby Atmos support for the Bullets Wireless Z.

In June, OnePlus rolled out Oxygen OS Beta 5 for the OnePlus 7T series. The updated added a couple of new features and plenty of smaller fixes that owners of the phone would appreciate. One of the biggest additions in this update was a new dark mode toggle that many users wanted for a long time. The June security patch was also released with this update. You can find the entire changelog here.

OnePlus on August 4 began rolling out Oxygen OS 10.3.4 for the OnePlus 7T in India with Oxygen OS 10.0.12 for global markets following later. In a forum post, the company said the update would add support for the OnePlus Buds, include a number of new clock styles, and bring the Android July 2020 security patch along with it.

Kuo: Chinese iPhone Shipments Could Decline Up to 30% If Apple Forced to Remove WeChat From Worldwide App Store [Updated]

In a worst-case scenario, Apple's annual iPhone shipments in China could decline by 25–30% if it is forced to remove WeChat from its App Stores around the world, according to a new research note from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo viewed by MacRumors. The removal could occur due to a recent executive order aiming to ban U.S. transactions with WeChat and its parent company Tencent.

Kuo lays out optimistic and pessimistic scenarios depending on whether Apple is only required to remove WeChat from the App Store in the United States or if the ban would apply to the ‌App Store‌ in all countries.

WeChat is extremely popular with Chinese mobile device users, essentially operating as its own platform on top of iOS and Android for many users, and Kuo argues that a worldwide ban on WeChat in the ‌App Store‌ would be devastating due to the size of the Chinese market.
Because WeChat has become a daily necessity in China, integrating functions such as messaging, payment, e-commerce, social networking, news reading, and productivity, if this is the case, we believe that Apple's hardware product shipments in the Chinese market will decline significantly. We estimate that the annual ‌iPhone‌ shipments will be revised down by 25–30%, and the annual shipments of other Apple hardware devices, including AirPods, iPad, Apple Watch and Mac, will be revised down by 15–25%.
Under his optimistic scenario in which WeChat is only removed from the U.S. ‌App Store‌, Kuo predicts ‌iPhone‌ shipments would be impacted by 3–6% with other Apple products being affected by less than 3%.

Apple does not break down its ‌iPhone‌ shipments by region, but overall, Greater China accounted for a little over 15% of Apple's total revenue during the June quarter, making it a significant part of Apple's business.

Kuo recommends that investors reduce their stock holdings of companies in Apple's supply chain such as LG Innotek and Genius Electronic Optical due to the risks of a WeChat ban. It does, however, remain to be seen what will happen as the prohibitions laid out in the executive order do not take effect until September 20. As a result, there is still time for the order to be clarified, modified, or rescinded.

Update 10:36 p.m. This article originally stated that the 30% decline was in reference to Apple's total ‌iPhone‌ shipments, but the research note is not completely clear as to whether it refers to global or Chinese shipments. Given the Chinese share of Apple's overall sales, it seems more likely to be referring to Chinese shipments.
