Leak: Huawei Mate X2 could fold inward like the Galaxy Z Fold 2

  • An industry insider believes Huawei will launch an inward folding phone, similar to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 2.
  • The display could be of similar size to the Mate X when unfolded.
  • The revised design is reportedly due to unreliable yields and high associated costs.

Despite its looming chipset troubles, Huawei is reportedly readying its third foldable smartphone. While it’s set to retain the Mate name, the device may not resemble anything we’ve seen from the company before.

According to a tweet by display industry insider Ross Young, the so-called Huawei Mate X2 will fold inward like Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 2 and not outward like the Huawei Mate X and Mate XS. This echoes previous rumors from January based on patents filed by Huawei.

In another tweet, Young suggests the display will span 8.03-inches across, matching the Mate X but slightly larger than its 7.7-inch Samsung counterpart.

Huawei Mate X2: Inward vs. outward

Samsung Galaxy Fold review resting on tracks

So why the design philosophy rework from Huawei? For starters, the outward folding design, although making for a more usable phone when folded, leaves the fragile display more vulnerable to damage. Young notes the outward folding system was too expensive for Huawei and that yields were “not good.” Huawei reportedly lost tens of millions on the Mate XS, likely owing to its ~$2,400 price tag.

However, the design tweak will come with its own set of issues. While the Mate X2 will reportedly use panels from Samsung and BOE, the Mate X2 will not use Ultra Thin Glass on its display. So even with the inward fold hiding the display when not in use, the Mate X2’s screen may be less resilient than recent foldable Samsungs.

The inward folding design would also force Huawei to rethink the camera layout on the Mate X2, and force the company to use a cover display for use when folded. This could further increase the cost of the device. And then there’s the hinge. This proved to be the Galaxy Fold‘s Achilles heel and it’s an issue that Huawei will need to address too.

Little else is known about the Huawei Mate X2, but we can posit a few educated guesses regarding its specifications. Depending on its launch date, it may share the Kirin 1000 chipset with the Huawei Mate 40. Huawei’s chipset supply has also been suffocated by US legislation, so we may see entirely different silicon making its bow within the foldable.

Nevertheless, expect the Mate X2 to cost a pretty penny. Huawei only expects affordable foldables to arrive by 2022.

Xiaomi says Mi Mix Alpha is no more, but new Mi Mix is coming

Xiaomi Mi Mix Alpha

  • Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun has confirmed that a new Mi Mix phone is in development.
  • He said that the Mi Mix Alpha will never be released commercially.
  • He also clarified that Xiaomi is still working on its own chipsets.

Xiaomi co-founder and CEO Lei Jun has finally opened up about some pertinent questions regarding the company’s future plans. Ahead of his commemorative speech marking Xiaomi’s 10th anniversary, Jun took to Weibo to answer the following three fan questions related to Xiaomi’s Mi Mix series and its proprietary chipsets:

  1. Is there a Mi Mix this time?
  2. When will the Mi Mix Alpha be mass-produced?
  3. Is Xiaomi still making Surge chipsets?

Let’s take a look at Jun’s answers to all these three questions one by one.

A new Mi Mix on its way?

Addressing the first question, Jun confirmed that Xiaomi is indeed working on a new Mi Mix phone. He said that the series represents breakthroughs in cutting-edge technology and that fans have high expectations for it. However, he also said that the next generation of Mi Mix will take some time, so don’t expect to see a new phone in the series anytime soon.

For what it’s worth, a previous report also suggested that Xiaomi is going full steam ahead with the Mi Mix 4. The company’s newly appointed VP and Chief Marketing Officer, Yang Zhe, will apparently run the show on the development and launch of the phone. Rumors suggest that it will feature a 120Hz curved display and 40W charging. The phone is also believed to arrive in two models, including a Pro version.

What happened to the Mi Mix Alpha?

Besides confirming a new Mi Mix model, Jun also put to rest all speculation about the Mi Mix Alpha. He said that the Alpha was a research project which has successfully concluded. He also admitted that it was too difficult to mass-produce the ambitious 360-degree display phone, so the company abandoned the idea and decided to focus on the next-gen Mi Mix phone instead.

Is Xiaomi still working on Surge chipsets?

Lastly, Jun answered a question about the future of the company’s proprietary Surge chipsets. Xiaomi unveiled its first in-house chipset — the Surge S1 — in 2017. The company never released a successor to the SoC, and so it seemingly abandoned the idea. However, Jun has now confirmed that Xiaomi hasn’t given up on its chipset plans. He said that the company did face huge difficulties after unveiling the Surge S1, but the project is still alive. He also assured fans that the company will share new developments when it has something to announce.

As mentioned before, Xiaomi is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year and Jun will deliver a keynote address marking the occasion on August 11. We expect to hear more about Xiaomi’s future plans and see some new devices at the event.

5 features that make the ACE 32" LED 808-DN4 TV a good buy

One thing that this pandemic has taught us is we have this innate need to keep ourselves entertained and informed about what's happening around us. To do that, we can browse on the Internet or watch shows on our television.

There's even a proposal to use TV networks to air educational shows for blended learning of students. So even with all the gadgets, laptops and new devices, you must at least own a basic TV.

If you're planning to buy a new one, the ACE 32 inch LED TV might be the best deal you can get for below PHP 5K. Here's why:

1. Modern look and slim build - This LED TV is a great fit if your room is kind of small and crowded with other stuff. Although the wall mount is not included in the packaging, there's an option to do so. It's good to know that it has a thin profile even with the plastic build.
Thin design and lightweight

At first, I had a small issue about the thinness of the TV stands included, they appear a little flimsy. But then, I realized they do enough job of supporting the body. As for the unit itself, it's light and easy to assemble. It's not a smart TV so there's no need for additional configuration.

The good thing about a lightweight TV is you can easily transfer it to other places or rooms.
Pleasant viewing experience

2. The display has decent details vivid colors enough colors for the price - Note that this TV has only 720p resolution, not a full HD (1080p), and this acceptable in this price range. It still delivers a decent performance in terms of visuals, colors, and contrast.

Another plus factor of this ACE 32 inch TV is its great viewing angle. Even in a slightly slanted position, I can still have enough glimpse of the content.
A lot of options for connection

3. Connectivity options - It's important for a TV to include many ports as possible since it will provide choices for users. This ACE TV has a great of ports since you can connect it through the following: composite audio/video, HDMI, PC VGA, PC Audio, TF Card, Audio Out, RF In, USB, and Coaxial.

Since I mentioned earlier that it has a fine screen quality, this can also be used as a monitor. Aside from that, it can be a suitable gaming companion if you want to use it with a console such as Nintendo Switch or PS4.

This TV is not only for watching series or shows, but also handy for gaming and work.

4. Smart energy-saving feature - You wouldn't want a high electricity bill to surprise you and the great news is this TV is designed to consume 50 watts. You can further reduce its power consumption by adjusting the brightness. Doing this will lessen eye fatigue especially if you're using it in dim or dark rooms.

5. Wallet-friendly price tag - Needless to say, the ACE 32" LED TV is pretty affordable compared to other brands.

You do not have to spend so much since it is currently on sale for just only PHP 4,480 (from its original price of PHP 7,000). It has a one-year warranty and you can purchase it with a cash-on-delivery option.
