Curved UltraWide display

Curved and ultra-wide monitors have steadily been gaining popularity over the years and recently, LG Philippines aims to address both features in one monitor. The new LG 34WL85C-B 34-inch curved ultra-wide monitor with a resolution of 3440 x 1440, HDR10, Thunderbolt 3, and MAXX AUDIO stereo speakers aims to fill the aforementioned Gap.

On paper, the display's specs are impressive but how does it perform in real-world scenarios? Let's find out.

Unboxing/Accessories

It comes in a massive black box with the render of the monitor. Inside the box are the 34-Inch Monitor, DisplayPort Cable, HDMI to HDMI Cable, Power Cable, External Power Adapter, Warranty, and Quickstart guide.

Multimedia Experience

Wide enough for three to four windows at the same time!
Wide enough for three to four windows at the same time!

The massive 34-inch panel with 3440 x 1440p resolution allows of up to 4 full-sized windows side by side at the same time. The display has a maximum brightness of 300 nits and supports HDR10, 8-bit + FRC color, and 99 percent of the sRGB color space which gives users an immersive, bright, and color-accurate visual experience.

At the bottom of the display are the speaker grills that houses the dual-channel 7W speakers.

These speakers were able to produce a sound that at maximum volume can fill a small bedroom.  Sound quality at maximum volume is good with minimal distortion and loss of crispness. Overall, we recommend placing the volume at 80 to 90 percent for the best sound crispness, depth, and clarity.

Performance

Adobe Photoshop

The large diagonal area allows for unparalleled multitasking with the ability to have multiple windows at the same time. The 21:9 aspect ratio could be an issue for watching or streaming movies as there will be letterboxing on top or on the sides depending on the aspect ratio of the video.

LG has added an anti-glare treatment on the panel and as you can see on the top left corner, it was able to minimize the glare of the light source whereas if the panel was untreated, it will just be a white reflection.

Otherwise, fans of movies or tv shows that support HDR10 will be happy that the display will be able to provide decent HDR because of the 8-bit + FRC support.

This means that the color reproduction capability and brightness of the display are more than enough for everyone.

This monitor is geared more towards productivity and media consumption over gaming. Great examples include people who need the real estate for Microsoft Excel or for Video editing complex and long timelines.

The curve adds to the immersion and it also allows the user to easily view content from edge to edge. One drawback of the curve is that it could throw off the distortion of Photographers who need images to be straight or aligned. This is a specialized case and may not apply to everyone.

It can be used for gaming but the 5ms response time could be an issue for a specific genre of pc games.

Color critical professionals that do not need 10-bit will be happy with the color reproduction of the display. For professionals that need true 10-bit and true HDR color reproduction, they may have to look for monitors with True 10-bit support and not 8-bit+FRC.

As you can see from the image above, you can fit your wide or high-resolution images and still have enough space for the tools and the Adobe Photoshop UI.

Our only nitpick is that widescreen, the user has to use more neck muscles to pan his/her eyes from one end of the monitor to the other. In the beginning, it causes cause sore neck muscles but eventually, the user's neck will get used to it.

Pros - Wide immersive display, HDR10 support, perfect for multi-tasking, 99 percent sRGB, height and tilt adjustable stand,
Cons - 5ms response time is not for gaming, At PHP 45,999 price isn't for everyone

Qualcomm wants to sell chips to Huawei, seeks license from US government

Due to the US sanctions, Huawei can't produce its self-designed Kirin chips at the moment. In fact, the company even said that the upcoming Mate 40 phones could be the last with its homegrown high-end chips.
Qualcomm wants to sell chips to Huawei, seeks license from US government
Huawei x Qualcomm if ever?

But being resilient as always, the company will source its chips from other makers like MediaTek and Samsung.

Huawei x Qualcomm?

Qualcomm sees this as an opportunity to sell chips to Huawei. But since it is a US firm, they need to get permission from the US government for them to make chips for Huawei.

So, Qualcomm is trying to persuade the US government to let them sell chips to Huawei.

The company argued in its presentation that Huawei will ultimately source its hardware to make 5G phones in the future from non-US companies like MediaTek and Samsung.

If Qualcomm won't get an opportunity to sell to Huawei, the company would lose about USD 8 billion a year.

There are also rumors that Huawei is looking into a partnership with MediaTek in 2020.

To recall, the Chinese tech giant has recently unseated Samsung as the top mobile maker in the world for Q2 2020Huawei is that big of a company for Qualcomm to ignore.

Samsung brings a Mystic Blue variant of the Note 20 to India

Samsung Note 20 Mystic Blue

Credit: Samsung
  • In India, Samsung will offer the Note 20 in an additional color: Mystic Blue.
  • The company hasn’t mentioned if it will sell the variant to other markets.

It was only a week ago that Samsung announced the Note 20 and Note 20 Ultra, but the company is already adding new color variants to the phone’s lineup. In India, the company said it will sell the Note 20 in an additional hue called Mystic Blue.

As of writing, the variant isn’t up on Samsung’s website, leaving Mystic Bronze and Mystic Black as the only two options currently. The press release the company shared also doesn’t mention a Mystic Blue version of the Note 20 Ultra. It’s unclear if Samsung plans to release the color in other markets.

While consumers in India can buy the Note 20 in several different colors, they have less choice when it comes to the phone’s internals. As things currently stand, Samsung is only selling a single variant of the device that comes with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage for Rs 77,999 (~$1,041) before trade-in offers. Likewise, there’s only one option when it comes to the Note 20 Ultra. For Rs 104,999 (~$1,401), Indian consumers can get the 256GB model with 5G connectivity. The new color won’t change the Note 20’s most controversial feature, but at least it gives buyers another choice, and a handsome one at that.

Samsung Galaxy Note 20 A "cheaper" Note
Samsung's Galaxy Note line has always been for the power users, and this year's models are no different. The standard Galaxy Note 20 has some trade-offs to hit a lower price point, but it should still satisfy many Note users.

OnePlus Nord
After years of only releasing top-tier flagships, OnePlus is back in the mid-range category with the OnePlus Nord. It cuts some corners, but we think many people will really like this phone — especially because of its £379 price tag.

OnePlus Nord updates

  • Current stable version: Oxygen OS based on Android 10
  • When will OnePlus Nord get Android 11?: September-October 2020 (Estimated)

The OnePlus Nord officially launched on July 21 with Oxygen OS 10.5 based on Android 10. Just like other OnePlus phones, the OnePlus Nord will also get two years of software updates and three years of security updates — Android 11 in 2020 and Android 12 in 2021. It could even get an upgrade to Android 13 in 2022, as the OnePlus 3T received four versions of Android during its lifespan (Marshmallow, Nougat, Oreo, and Pie).

OnePlus rolled out (h/t Gadgets360) Oxygen OS 10.5.1 to the OnePlus Nord just a day after its launch. The software carried improvements for the depth sensor and indoor image quality. It also optimized power efficiency for 4K video recording at 60fps and improved the overall video recording experience.

A few days later, OnePlus announced Oxygen OS 10.5.2 for the OnePlus Nord. It came with newly adapted firmware for the OnePlus Buds, optimized the process of starting the camera with gestures, improved video calling, and introduced the July 2020 security patch to the phone. It also optimized power efficiency for 4K video shooting with the front camera alongside other stability improvements.

In early August, the OnePlus Nord started getting its third software update in the form of Oxygen OS 10.5.3. This was a small one and just carried some system stability improvements.

On August 10, OnePlus started rolling out Oxygen OS 10.5.4 for the OnePlus Nord. This update improves the launch speed of the Gallery app, enhances the display experience, and fixes an issue with music playing in the background while using the front camera. The update further improves video call quality, color accuracy and white balance of low-light selfies, as well as vibrancy and color accuracy of the macro camera.

Those are all the OnePlus Nord updates we know about till now.

Garmin's new solar charging technology

Garmin uses a one-of-a-kind Power Glass solar charging panel. The company designed an ultrathin layer of tiny conductive elements on top of a glass panel. This then creates a multilayer structure that measures 0.5mm thick. This converted light into electrical energy while maintaining a high ability to absorb so that when paired with a Memory-in-Pixel display it retains clear and full-color visibility under bright sunlight.

Garmin also has the Power Manager feature that allows the user to easily toggle the watch functions according to their usage needs for the day. It deactivates unused or lesser used functions on low activity level days.
