Huawei recently held its "Better World Summit 2020" which was headed by its Rotating Chairman Guo Ping and Corporate Senior Vice President and Director of the Board Catherine Chen.
Everything you need to know about the Huawei Better World Summit 2020
Huawei Better World Summit 2020

Inclusive future for all

Huawei's Rotating Chairman Guo Ping opened the summit by elaborating how five major tech domains can help unlock the full potential of 5G by working together. When technologies like 5G, computing, cloud, and AI come together, they reinforce each other and create numerous opportunities.

We can mix and match them to create scenario-based solutions that meet the unique needs of our customers and partners. This is key to unlocking the full potential of 5G and driving commercial success, Guo mentioned.

For 5G to succeed commercially, the entire industry needs to work together. Vertical industry applications can be replicated at scale only when unified industry standards and a collaborative ecosystem are in place.

He also mentioned about how ICT offers concrete tools to aid in the fight against COVID-19.

By drawing on our experience in early hotspots, we have developed nine scenario-based solutions that use ICT technology to help combat the pandemic. Whether it's hospital network deployment, remote consultation, online education, or restarting governments and businesses, we've been sharing our experience and capabilities to help control the spread of the virus and reopen economies, said Guo.

Huawei has three suggestions on how more precise deployment can maximize the value of networks:

  • First, carriers should prioritize user experience and spend money where it's needed most to maximize the value of existing networks.
  • Second, carriers should make the most of existing 4G and FTTx networks, and integrate them with new 5G networks through holistic coordination and precise planning.
  • Third, 5G deployment plans should prioritize hotspots and key industry applications.

The following are the rest of the speakers for Day 1 along with the summary of their messages:

  1. Liu Guiqing, Executive Vice President and Executive Director of China Telecom - shared the carrier's strategy and applications for driving digital transformation across industries through the convergence of cloud and networks.
  2. Hatem Bamatraf, CTO of Etisalat International - presented Etisalat's experience using ICT to fight the pandemic and drive economic recovery.
  3. Bernice Samuels, Executive: Group Marketing of MTN - explored how MTN will speed up its digital transformation process to extend the benefits of modern connected life to everyone in the post-pandemic era.
  4. Alex Sinclair, CTO of GSMA - shared insights into how ICT can enable new economic development.
  5. Adrian Scrase, head of 3GPP MCC and CTO of ETSI - emphasized that an open, transparent, equal, and impartial environment for industry collaboration is crucial for setting unified standards and promoting shared success worldwide.

To revive the economy, we need top-down designs, as well as bottom-up creativity and vitality, noted Chen. Supporting government policies coupled with active digital transformation across the industry will bring the benefits of digital technology to all industries, boost their efficiency, and restore growth.

Referencing the recent World Bank report on the growing gap between the fast-growing global digital economy and a lack of digital skills, Chen said:

Huawei is continuing with its flagship Seeds for the Future program. This program was launched in 2008, and is designed to develop local ICT talent. So far, this program has benefited more than 30,000 students from over 400 universities in 108 countries and regions. Due to the pandemic, we are moving the program online and opening it up to more outstanding students than ever before. As more industries adopt digital technologies, they will drive the United Nation's 2030 Strategic Development Goals, especially those related to climate change.

Other speakers also shared their views on how to build a better world in the future at the event.
  • Senior officers from international organizations, including the ITU, GSMA, and ECTA, spoke on building globally unified ICT standards, promoting the digital economy, accelerating digital inclusiveness, and embracing these new economic normals.
  • National regulators and policy makers at the event focused more on best practices. Regulators from South Africa, Thailand, China, and Germany as well as the senior management of multiple industry associations described current efforts and policy initiatives they are taking to drive investment in digital infrastructure and digital transformation across multiple industries.
  • Several senior analysts at the summit also explained at length how spillover from the digital economy will help revive real economies.

Signal message requests let users control how they're contacted

The change applies to messages, video calls, and voice calls

As Signal Messenger continues on its mission to enter the mainstream, the company has heard from users who want more control over who can start a conversation, and how. Now when a person who isn't in your contacts tries to send a message, you'll be able to see more information before taking action on the message — a nice step when it comes to privacy.

Not only can you preview a conversation before accepting the message, but you can also delete or block the message request if it's not up your alley.
