After years of only releasing top-tier flagships, OnePlus is back in the mid-range category with the OnePlus Nord. It cuts some corners, but we think many people will really like this phone — especially because of its £379 price tag.

OnePlus Nord updates

  • Current stable version: Oxygen OS based on Android 10
  • When will OnePlus Nord get Android 11?: September-October 2020 (Estimated)

The OnePlus Nord officially launched on July 21 with Oxygen OS 10.5 based on Android 10. Just like other OnePlus phones, the OnePlus Nord will also get two years of software updates and three years of security updates — Android 11 in 2020 and Android 12 in 2021. It could even get an upgrade to Android 13 in 2022, as the OnePlus 3T received four versions of Android during its lifespan (Marshmallow, Nougat, Oreo, and Pie).

OnePlus rolled out (h/t Gadgets360) Oxygen OS 10.5.1 to the OnePlus Nord just a day after its launch. The software carried improvements for the depth sensor and indoor image quality. It also optimized power efficiency for 4K video recording at 60fps and improved the overall video recording experience.

A few days later, OnePlus announced Oxygen OS 10.5.2 for the OnePlus Nord. It came with newly adapted firmware for the OnePlus Buds, optimized the process of starting the camera with gestures, improved video calling, and introduced the July 2020 security patch to the phone. It also optimized power efficiency for 4K video shooting with the front camera alongside other stability improvements.

In early August, the OnePlus Nord started getting its third software update in the form of Oxygen OS 10.5.3. This was a small one and just carried some system stability improvements.

On August 10, OnePlus started rolling out Oxygen OS 10.5.4 for the OnePlus Nord. This update improves the launch speed of the Gallery app, enhances the display experience, and fixes an issue with music playing in the background while using the front camera. The update further improves video call quality, color accuracy, and white balance of low-light selfies, as well as the vibrancy and color accuracy of the macro camera.

Later on August 24, OnePlus rolled out Oxygen OS 10.5.5 to the OnePlus Nord. The update brought a number of system bug fixes and power improvements to the phone. It also improved image clarity of the front camera in low light conditions as well as clarity of the macro camera.

In early September, OnePlus pushed Oxygen OS 10.5.7 to the Nord. The update wasn’t massively exciting but did bring improvements to power consumption and 4K 60fps video stabilization. Surprisingly, the Android security patch for August was missing from the equation.

Welcome to the OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7 Pro updates hub. Here you’ll find everything you need to know about the latest Android updates for the two devices, including their current versions and when future updates are likely to arrive.

Both the 7 and 7 Pro run Oxygen OS, OnePlus’ proprietary Android skin. Oxygen OS is known for fast updates that come for a very long time, so be sure to bookmark this page and visit often.

Note the OnePlus 7 and 7 Pro sometimes receive updates at the same time. Also, note that T-Mobile and Sprint variants of the OnePlus 7 Pro might receive software updates at a later date.

OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7 Pro updates

  • Current stable version: Android 10
  • When will the OnePlus 7 and 7 Pro get Android 11? September 2020 (estimated)

The OnePlus 7 and 7 Pro launched on May 14, 2019, with the then-latest version of Android, Android 9 Pie. It’s expected both devices will receive at least two major Android updates in the future.

Unlocked variants of the two phones started receiving Android 10 in late September, though many users didn’t see the OTA for weeks after before OnePlus quietly shelved it due to a few pesky bugs. The rollout began anew in mid-October as OxygenOS version 10.0.1.

At the end of December, the Android 10 update for the T-Mobile variant of the OnePlus 7 Pro finally began rolling out. The update came in as Oxygen OS 10.0.1 and included the November 2019 security patch. Unlocked 7 Pro models are on Oxygen OS 10.3.0, although it’s not clear which features the T-Mobile update is missing, if any.

OnePlus has confirmed that the OnePlus 7 Pro 5G will eventually be upgraded to OxygenOS 10 — though users will have to wait until Q1 2020 to see it.

What did 2020 bring so far?

Right after the beginning of the new year, OnePlus released the latest Oxygen OS Open Beta 8 builds for OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7 Pro users. This update brought several bug fixes including touch screen optimizations and camera performance tweaks as well as the December security patch.

In mid-February, OnePlus released the Oxygen OS Open Beta 9 build and Oxygen OS 10.3.1 stable update for the OnePlus 7 Pro. Both updates include several bug fixes, tweaks, and January’s security patch.

In March, the OnePlus 7 Pro 5G was also updated to the stable version of Android 10. This exclusive version of Oxygen OS 10 landed as a 2GB+ download and its changelog was the same as the one for the OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7 Pro Android 10 update.

Later in the month, the OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7 Pro got the new Oxygen OS Open Beta 10 update. According to a post on the OnePlus Forums, the update included the February 2020 security patches as well as some bug fixes and system optimizations.

The Open Beta 11 update followed shortly thereafter, bringing the March 2020 security update, as well as the Instant Translation feature. This function translates audio in video calls to the native language of users, supporting English, French, German, Hindi, and Chinese.

March 2020 was also the month when OnePlus 7 Pro 5G devices on Sprint finally got updated to Android 10. Not long after, the EU variant saw the OxygenOS 10.0.5 OTA, which introduced general bug fixes and tweaks.

On the last day of the month, OnePlus released the stable OxygenOS 10.3.2 update with the March 2020 security patch in tow for the OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7 Pro. This brought improved RAM management, slow-mo recording stability, video playback fluidity, and more.

The firm released the Open Beta 13 update on May 8, bringing dirty camera lens notifications, the April 2020 security patch, and various fixes.

OnePlus in June brought a new Dark Mode toggle in the notification bar, tweaks to the dialing interface, and a number of bug fixes. The June 2020 Android Security patch also arrived in tow.

In August, Open Beta 17 brought a new user assistance feature to help onboard new OnePlus users, optimizations to File Manager and Wi-Fi transfers, and the Android security patch for August 2020.

Mid-September saw the rollout of Open Beta 18 for the OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7 Pro which packed a lengthy list of tweaks and enhancements to Game Space and Community apps. The update also included the September 2020 Android security patch and the August 2020 GMS package.

The OnePlus 7 series is expected to see Android 11 in 2020. It’s possible that it will also receive an update to Android 12 in 2021, as the OnePlus 3T received three updates during its lifespan (to Nougat, Oreo, and Pie).

MediaTek, Ericsson perform World's First Interoperability test with Dimensity 1000+!

MediaTek and Ericsson that both companies conducted the world's 1st 5G interoperability test using Dimensity 1000+.
MediaTek, Ericsson perform World's First Interoperability test with Dimensity 1000+
Dimensity 1000+ put through interoperability test

MediaTek, Ericsson 5G interoperability test

This test is in preparation for the rollout of 5G standalone networks. It is the first successful test that completed all three combinations of new radio (NR) time division duplex and frequency division duplex carrier aggregation on a single Dimensity 5G chipset.

Three combinations included carrier aggregation of TDD+TDD, FDD+TDD, and FDD+FDD. They were able to establish the 5G SA data call on 200MHz total aggregated bandwidth. The test also included different channel bandwidth configurations, showcasing the flexibility and scalability of the Dimensity 1000+ to support different spectrum holdings for carriers worldwide.

There were also tests for FDD bands, sub-2.6GHz, CA tests on two carrier components of 20MHz or both non-standalone and SA networks. This type of CA technology will allow communication service providers to deploy 5G in a wider coverage offering down speeds of over 400Mbps in nationwide coverage by aggregating FDD spectrum assets.

The combination of NR FDD sub-2.6GHz and NR TDD sub-6GHz aims to provide better both coverage and capacity enhancements. The tests showed how seamless groupings of 5G connections can provide over 30 percent greater throughput on average. This allows service providers to manage 5G capacity more efficiently.

The tests were conducted in lab settings using a MediaTek Dimensity 1000+ commercial chipset and an Ericsson AIR 6488 5G radio using 5G NR commercial software and Ericsson’s dual-mode 5G Cloud Core solution. The implementation is fully compliant with 3GPP’s Release 15 specifications for 5G.

Windows on Arm will support a lot more apps starting next month

Microsoft Edge Chromium Surface Pro X

  • Microsoft has announced that 64-bit app emulation is coming to Windows on Arm next month.
  • The feature will be offered to consumers in the Windows Insider program first.
  • It allows users to run more legacy 64-bit Windows apps, such as games and editing tools.

The first Windows on Arm laptops and convertibles were released in 2018, offering Windows 10 on power-efficient Arm chips rather than legacy x64 silicon from Intel and AMD. Microsoft used emulation to allow 32-bit legacy apps to still run on Windows on Arm, but 64-bit app emulation hasn’t been possible until now.

Now, the Redmond company has announced (h/t: XDA-Developers) that it will indeed bring 64-bit app emulation to Windows on Arm next month. The company says users in the Windows Insider program will get the feature first, so users at large can expect to get it some time thereafter.

This was one of the biggest omissions from Windows on Arm up until now, as it meant that 64-bit only legacy apps such as several Adobe creative apps and numerous games simply wouldn’t work on these machines (although 64-bit Arm apps still worked). So those hoping to use Adobe Premiere Pro CS5, the 64-bit version of Photoshop, or wanting to play more games via Steam can theoretically do so, although performance, polish and power consumption remains to be seen.

There’s still more room for improvement though, especially when it comes to driver support on the Arm-powered platform. More specifically, Microsoft previously noted that drivers for hardware, games, and apps will only work if they’re designed for Windows on Arm. In other words, those reliant on legacy peripherals seem to be largely out of luck for now. But hopefully we see developments in this regard if Microsoft isn’t already focusing on this issue.

Nevertheless, our own Robert Triggs was pretty happy with the strides made by the platform in recent times. More specifically, he noted that even first-generation computers have delivered much improved 32-bit app emulation and a wider range of native apps. However, both Rob and our Gary Sims agree that price is still a major barrier of entry for Windows on Arm machines.
