WhatsApp taking up all your storage? Expect a new storage tool this week

WhatsApp storage management

  • WhatsApp has started pushing out a new storage management tool.
  • The tool gives users file deletion suggestions and several more options.

We first heard about new storage management tools for WhatsApp back in June 2020, thanks to frequent WhatsApp leaker WABetaInfo. It’s taken a while, but the Facebook-owned team has finally confirmed official details.

The company announced that its revised storage management tool is being pushed out to users worldwide this week, and will replace the legacy storage menu (Settings > Storage and data > Manage storage).

The new storage management menu offers deletion suggestions for large files (bigger than 5MB) as well as for files that have been forwarded many times. Furthermore, users are able to bulk-delete files and sort them by age or size. You’ll also get a visual breakdown of total storage used by WhatsApp, as well as how much storage is remaining overall.

Fortunately, the legacy option of being able to view and manage storage usage by chat is still intact here. So if you know a certain group is responsible for using up most of your storage, you can quickly take action here.

It looks like the new storage management menu is simply a server-side switch rather than coming via a WhatsApp update. We’ve already received the functionality, so chances are good that it’s on the way to you if you haven’t received it yet.

MacBooks with custom Apple ARM chip?

At the event, the American tech giant is expected to announce its own Macs using ARM-based Apple Silicon chips. This could be the first time that Apple won't be using Intel processors since 2005.

Apple's animated teaser showing an Apple logo that would open like the lid of a laptop probably confirmed that it would indeed be a MacBook.

To recall, back in June at the annual WWDC, Apple CEO Tim Cook shared that Apple will transition Mac devices from Intel-powered processors to its custom Apple silicon ARM-based processors.

It aims to
establish a common architecture across all Apple products which will make it significantly easier for developers to write, optimize, and develop apps for the entire Apple ecosystem.

The company also earlier said that it can get better performance with lower power consumption from its own ARM-based chips than it can with Intel processors.

Apple is rumored to start this move with a MacBook first followed by its entire product lineup up to the desktops at some point in time.

Apart from the laptop with a custom chip, Apple might also launch the macOS 11 Big Sur during the event.
