10 best standing desk options available

Standing desks have been all the hype in recent years. Their rise in popularity brought an onslaught of standing desk manufacturers to the market. With so many options out there, it’s hard to pick the right one, so we have put together a list of the best standing desks around.

Editor’s note: We’ll be updating this list of the best standing desks regularly as new units launch.

Are standing desks healthier?

For a while, sitting became something like the new smoking. Sitting for long periods of time was associated with shorter lifetimes, cardiovascular problems, obesity, diabetes, and even cancer. Sit/stand desks became the new way of the healthy office. While we think standing desks are great, we would like to point out standing for long periods of time is not the best answer to your health concerns either.

A 2016 study by the Journal of Physical Activity and Health proves the difference in calorie burning is very small when comparing standing vs sitting (about 8 calories per hour). You won’t exactly loose weight just by using a standing desk. The same study recommends physical activity instead.

Furthermore, a 2018 study by the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine discovered switching sitting with standing offers no significant improvements to cardiovascular health. Likewise, they promote more physical activity to improve upon these health issues.

To make matters more concerning, another study by the American Journal of Epidemiology mentions jobs that require extended periods of standing can be twice as likely to cause heart disease as compared to sitting jobs.

So, should you stand or sit? The answer doesn’t seem to be as straight-forward as we would wish, and the industry calls for more research, but the consensus seems to be there should be a balance. A person forced to work in an office should try to divide sitting and standing time, while also taking time to move around and get some physical activity.

This is what makes sit/stand desks enticing; they offer the ability to sit or stand at will, possibly inspiring more movement. Health reasons aside, they are definitely good, versatile work tools to have. With so many options available, they have also become more adaptable to each user. You can choose between many sizes, heights, strengths, designs, styles, and prices.

If I were to buy a standing desk and money was no issue, it would be the Fully Jarvis Evolve. This sit/stand desk is perfect for the home office, offering a gorgeous design. It also features three drawers, which is something more standing desk makers should consider adding to their designs.

The smallest version is 48 x 27 inches, while the largest is 72 x 27 inches. It can lift up to 350 pounds and height can be adjusted between 29 and 48.25 inches with the mid-range frame. They make it possible to upgrade to an extended range frame, which can go from 25.25 to 50.75 inches.

3. Ikea Idasen Sit/Stand Desk

IKEA IDÅSEN Standing Desk

While Ikea is known for its affordable furniture, the Ikea Idasen Sit/Stand desk is something special. Its intuitive height-control lever is a beauty to use. You just push it up or down to make the table higher or lower. However, the lack of height preset doesn’t make the Idasen any less smart, as the desk features Bluetooth and can be controlled from a smartphone app.

Ikea’s Idasen is easily one of the best standing desks, and at $599 you aren’t paying too much for the unique design, sturdy construction, and cool features.
