Huawei Nova 7i: First Camera Samples

A modern smartphone experience won't be that fun if it can't take good images. Huawei knows that and it is the reason why the Nova 7i is equipped with plenty of cameras despite its PHP 13,990 affordable price tag. Let's check it out!

At the back, it has a total of four cameras found in the square camera bump. The handset sports a 48MP f/1.8 primary camera with PDAF and CAF autofocus systems paired with an 8MP f/2.4 120-degree ultra-wide-angle secondary camera, 2MP f/2.4 4cm camera for macro slots, and another 2MP sensor for depth effect. Underneath, it has a single LED flash.

Daylight
Daylight

In daylight, this device flexed its capabilities. It showed great details, colors, and range. It has a bit of artifact, but forgivable. This is one of the best-looking daylight shots for the price so far.
100 percent crop
100 percent crop

Upon closer inspection at max 100 percent crop, you can still see that the shot is detailed and not that noisy. It means that the shot I got above is a well-detailed shot.
Well lit
Well lit

In another well-lit shot, details and exposure along with the colors are great again. The details on the wall can still be seen and it isn't overly bright.
Against the light
Against the light

For against the light shots, it'll struggle a little. But, it is still not as underexposed as other mid-range camera phones. The dynamic range is still respectable here. All you need to do is adjust the exposure in the brightness of the gallery app of your phone and this shot will be social media-ready.
Ultra-wide
Ultra-wide

And yes, this phone has a secondary wide cam. Even if it isn't a large sensor, the quality is still quite good. It is still detailed and the colors are consistent and similar to the main cam. Distortion is there like other wide cams, but it isn't overly warped, unlike other entry-level and mid-rangers.

For against the light scenes, the wide-cam can still perform. The loss of details and dynamic range is a bit more noticeable versus the against the light shot using the main cam though. But, that's understandable.
Normal, 6x zoom
Normal, 6x zoom

If you like to zoom, you can. In daylight, it is decent up to 4x zoom. It maxes at 6x and it is still respectable to my eyes.
Normal, macro
Normal, macro

The other feature that I like about its cam is the macro mode. It has the ability to take super close-up images without the need of using the zoom. Also, it is a respectable macro mode, unlike other potato macro modes.
Portrait mode (Normal and 100 percent crop)
Portrait mode (Normal and 100 percent crop)

Using the fourth 2MP f/2.4 depth cam, you can create shots with DSLR-like background blur. In my experience, it is alright in quality, but not that great.

Normal vs night mode
Normal vs night mode

In low light, thanks to its 48MP shooter with 4-in-1 pixel binning tech, the Nova 7i shoots images with good exposure, colors, and details. It isn't that noisy as well. It also has a handheld AI-assisted Night mode up to 6 seconds that will even lessen the noise and improve details along with dynamic range and exposure.

Night mode

The Night mode of this device is not overly done as well. It isn't too sharp and not overexposed. Just right so far.

For selfies, it has a 16MP snapper that shoots detailed well-lit selfies. It has a decent looking Portrait mode with Beauty mode as well.

It also has screen flash to still let users take good selfies even in the dark. It is one of the better performing low light selfie cams for me.

Quick thoughts

To my eyes, the first images that I got are near 2019 flagship-grade and that's very impressive.

It shoots highly detailed images in the dark, the wide cam looks good, the zoom is decent, the macro mode is not potato quality, and it takes great images in the dark.

The bokeh mode could be improved, but its performance is still considered decent for the price.

Even the selfie cam looks great for a PHP 13,990 phone so far.

We will further explore its cameras and will show you more of our findings along with the video samples in our upcoming full review.

Are you guys impressed as well? Let us know!
