The Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 2 has arrived just in time to catch the noise-cancelling true wireless wave. The company markets to the sophisticated among us with the mature design, and the understated branding speaks to the company’s confidence. Enough admiring of appearances, though, let’s see what’s new inside.
Most notably, the new Momentum totally wireless earbuds feature noise-cancelling technology, making them a worthy adversary for Sony and Apple. Noise-cancelling technology combats external noise, leaving listeners to appreciate a more intimate musical experience.
Not only do noise-cancelling headphones quiet the world around you, they also promote a more accurate perception of sound. ANC prevents auditory masking which is when a loud sound makes it difficult to perceive a relatively quiet one. When we’re commuting, environmental noise (e.g. chatter) can permeate our headsets and make it difficult to hear our music. It’s not that our music is getting quieter, but rather that our brains are prioritizing this louder noise. ANC does the grunt work by actively cancelling out outside noises so our brains can stay focused on music playback.
The new earbuds boast other improvements like a seven-hour battery life and a USB-C case that provides three additional charge cycles, totaling 28 hours of playtime. Sennheiser made slight alterations to the Momentum Wireless 2: the earbuds are smaller than before and have improved ergonomics to mitigate wear fatigue. If you were a fan of the previous generation’s fit and finish, you’ll be glad that the company kept the same build.
Sennheiser is an audio industry stalwart, so I expect nothing less than excellent sound quality from its new earbuds. If the original Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless in-ears are any indication, the audio reproduction will be consumer-friendly without excess bass emphasis. Plus, you can always elect to make custom adjustments via the Smart Control app.
When you invest in Sennheiser, you invest in premium audio quality.
Just as before, users can access Google Assistant, Alexa, or Siri directly from the touch panels. The Momentum True Wireless 2 also retain automatic ear detection functionality, so removing the earphones automatically pauses playback. Re-inserting them automatically resumes playback, something not afforded by some earbuds like the Samsung Galaxy Buds Plus.
The Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 2 will be available in April for $299.95. Anyone who wants the white variant will have to wait indefinitely. I’m eagerly awaiting these new earphones and we’ll be sure to update you once the in-depth review is up.
