Over the years, Huawei has been steadily expanding its line of laptops in the Philippine market.

Launched earlier this year, the aggressively priced MateBook D 15 offered unprecedented value for its price because of its build quality and specifications.

Several months after, Huawei has brought the MateBook X Pro 2020 to the Philippines to fill the gap in the premium high-performance ultrabook segment.

For PHP 119,990, the MateBook X Pro offers a 13.9-inch LTPS touch display with an Intel Core 10th-Gen processor, NVIDIA GeForce MX250 GPU, up to 16GB RAM, up to a 1TB SSD storage, and a 56WHr battery with 65W charger.

On paper, it is impressive. How is it out of the box though?

Unboxing/Accessories

It comes in white packaging made of premium materials with minimal design and branding.

Inside the white box are the MateBook X Pro, USB Type-C to USB Type-C cable, and 65W Huawei power plug. In the retail version, it will include documentation and manuals.

Note: Those who pre-order from April 15 to April 24, 2020, will get freebies worth PHP 119,990 that include Huawei Freebuds 3, Huawei Backpack, and Huawei Mouse.

Build Quality/Design

Out of the box, the MateBook X Pro stuns with its textured finish and the polished finish of the Huawei logo on its lightweight aluminum housing.

At the bottom is the same textured finished lightweight aluminum but with four rubber feet and several screws.

Polished aluminum finish!

As soon as you pull the laptop out of the box, you immediately feel how solid the metal frame is. We even tried flexing the body with all our strength and it wouldn't budge. Design-wise, it is incredibly slim and sexy with the right amount of curves in the right areas.
Touch display
Touch display

In front of the laptop is a U-shaped slit where you place your fingers to open the laptop. You will immediately notice the 13.9-inch LTPS touchscreen display with a resolution of 3000 x 2000 at 259 ppi and a maximum brightness of 450 nits.

Super slim bezels!

When you turn on the device and see the display light up, it is immediately apparent how thin the bezels are. This laptop offers an immersive 91 percent screen-to-body ratio.
Chicklet keys
Chiclet keyboard

The keyboard's chicklet keys offer sufficient travel while offering just enough resistance and feedback that makes typing on this device satisfying. We understand that Huawei wanted the most compact and lightweight design but for some people, the keys could be tighter than what they are used to. We will see if we get used to it right away in the full review.

It has easy to understand function keys on the F buttons that you can use to adjust the brightness of the screen, control the volume, mute the mic, turn on and off the WiFi, print screen, and more.
1MP webcam
1MP webcam

Like the MateBook X, the 1MP webcam is cleverly hidden in between the function keys. You press the key and the camera pops-out. This adds another layer of security while allowing for thinner top bezels.

Some people may not like it because the camera is directly looking up the user's chin and nose. It will be up to the customer if this will be a deal-breaker or not.
Power button doubles as a fingerprint scanner
Power button doubles as a fingerprint scanner

There is a power button that works as a fingerprint scanner in one. It is one of the fastest and most accurate around. The unlocking speed is actually smartphone-like.

Huawei was able to pack all those features in a compact 304 x 217 x 14.6 mm chassis that weighs only 1.33 kg.

In spite of the slim form factor, Huawei was able to give the MateBook X Pro a respectable selection of Ports with one USB Type-A port, two USB Type-C ports, and one 3.5mm headphone jack. Given its price point, we had hoped that it would also have either a microSD or SD card reader like the similarly priced Dell XPS 13.

As of the moment

Overall, we are very impressed with the premium and solid build quality, slim bezels, specifications, and the large immersive display.

Take note that the equivalent Apple Macbook Pro 13 configured with a quad-core i7, 16GB RAM, and 1TB of storage would cost over PHP 161,990. This means that the MateBook X Pro 2020 is actually a good deal.

We are looking forward to reviewing the MateBook X Pro 2020 in depth.
