Samsung to design a custom flagship chip for Google

The Samsung-made Google chip will use the standard ARM CPU and GPU design instead of Samsung custom cores along with Google customized solutions.

The chip is reportedly built using Samsung's 5nm EUV process for better power efficiency and thermal management. It'll use 2x Cortex-A78 power cores, 2x Cortex-A75 middle cores, 4x Cortex-A55 efficiency cores, a Mali MP20 GPU design dubbed as Borr.

Just note that the Cortex-A78 and Borr cores are yet to be officially announced, so details about them are still scarce.

To recall, Cortex-A77 is 20 percent faster than Cortex-A76. If this trend will continue, Cortex-A78 will be a formidable core.

The custom chip is also said to feature Google's Visual Core ISP and NPU for imaging and AI, respectively.

If this report is true, Google might not rely on expensive Qualcomm chips for its future Pixel phones anymore. If they are successful, this might lead to a more customized performance of Pixel phones.
