Canalys: Samsung is still the world's top smartphone vendor, Xiaomi is growing

According to the latest report by research firm Canalys, the Coronavirus pandemic wreaked havoc on the global smartphone market in Q1 2020. Worldwide shipments are down by 13 percent to 272 million.

Samsung is still on top, Xiaomi posted the biggest growth despite the COVID-19 situation

Samsung and Huawei retained their positions as the number 1 and 2 mobile makers in the world, but their shipments are down by 17 percent. Samsung shipped 59.6 million or 21.9 percent of the market share from 71.5 million or 22.8 percent of the market share in Q1 2019.

Apple is still at the number 3 position with 13.6 percent or 37.1 million units shipped. Apple is down by 8 percent versus its Q1 2019 numbers.

Out of the top 5 mobile makers, only Xiaomi and Vivo posted growth.

Xiaomi grew by 9 percent to increase its market share to 11.1 percent in Q1 2020 versus 8.9 percent in Q1 2019. In particular, Xiaomi has already shipped 30.2 million units this year.

Meanwhile, Vivo kicked OPPO out of the number 5 spot. It grew by 3 percent YoY which is equivalent to 24.2 million units shipped during the first period of 2020.

Smartphones are still a necessity for most people, but many customers who would have bought a new smartphone as a luxury have delayed the purchase.

Canalys added that most smartphone companies in Q2 will represent the peak of the Coronavirus impact.
