- India has called for a ban on over 52 Chinese apps amidst border tensions.
- The list includes popular apps like TikTok, Zoom, and others from Xiaomi.
Amidst ongoing tensions between India and China, Indian intelligence officials have released a list of apps that the agency considers a potential security risk.
The list includes high-profile apps like TikTok and popular games like Clash of Kings. Previously, the Indian government had called for a ban on video-conferencing service Zoom. Zoom, in particular, has been privy to severe scrutiny in the US and abroad over possible security flaws, privacy concerns, and the lack of encryption. The company finally relented and enabled end-to-end encryption for all users, even those on the free tier.
Other noteworthy apps on the list include Xiaomi’s first-party apps like Mi Community and Mi Store. The two serve as key touchpoints for feedback and to enable sales of ecosystem products.
The full list includes over 52 apps (h/t Hindustan Times) and has been backed by the National Security Council with further plans to assess the risk associated with each app. A potential concern is that the apps not just leak data, but might also be used to degrade network conditions in case of conflict.
Intelligence agencies have advised the government to block or ban the apps but there has been no official announcement yet. We’ve got the full list of apps below.
