  • Fitbit devices could soon gain support for Google Assistant.
  • Evidence for Assistant support was discovered in an APK teardown of the Fitbit Android app.
  • The Fitbit Versa 2 is the most likely candidate to get Assistant support first.

Fitbit is currently in the process of being acquired by Google. As the deal awaits regulatory approval, it seems we’ll finally be able to use some Google tech on Fitbit wearables. According to evidence unearthed by 9to5Google, Fitbit is preparing to add support for the Google Assistant on its devices.

In an APK teardown of the Fitbit Android app, the publication found strings of code describing the process for activating the Google Assistant. The setup seems similar to that of Amazon’s Alexa voice assistant on the Fitbit Versa 2, suggesting that the smartwatch is a likely candidate to receive Google Assistant support.

Further, the app strings mention that only one voice assistant can be activated at a time. So if the Fitbit Versa 2 does get the Google Assistant, you’ll probably have to deactivate Alexa in order to use it. 9to5Google notes that Amazon’s voice service “won’t immediately go away when the Google Assistant is introduced.” However, given that Google might soon become Fitbit’s parent company, Alexa support on its devices could eventually fade away.

Currently, Alexa allows Fitbit Versa users to start an exercise, get quick news, info, and weather updates, set reminders, control smart home devices, and more. The Google Assistant will probably provide the same services, but we’ll have to wait for an official announcement to know more.
