5G who? Samsung is already working on 6G with peak data rate of 1,000 Gbps

While the commercialization of 5G is still in its initial state, Samsung said that it's never too early to start for the next technology.

Earliest completion and commercialization date of 6G could be as early as 2028

In fact, as early as now, the advanced R&D hub Samsung Research is already working on 6G. Samsung recently published a white paper detailing its plans for this upcoming technology.

The company is looking to accelerate 6G research when it founded its Advanced Communications Research Center in May of last year.

Samsung said that they started this early as it typically takes around 10 years from the start of research to commercialization of a new generation communications technology.

Samsung's Head of the Advanced Communications Research Center said:
We've already launched the research and development of 6G technologies by building upon the experience and ability we have accumulated from working on multiple generations of communications technology, including 5G. Going forward, we are committed to leading the standardization of 6G in collaboration with various stakeholders across industry, academia, and government fields.

In its white paper, Samsung said that the earliest completion and commercialization date of 6G could be as early as 2028. 2030 could be the date of its mass commercialization.

6G is expected to be so much better in User Experience Data Rate (Gbps), Energy Efficiency, Spectral Efficiency, Air Latency (ms), Connection Density (devices/km2), Reliability, and Peak Data Rate (Gbps) versus 5G.

6G aims to provide a peak data rate of 1,000 Gbps and a user data rate of 1 Gbps. In comparison, 5G is designed to achieve 20 Gbps of peak data rate.

6G is also expected to use the terahertz (THz) frequency band signals, advanced duplex technologies, and more.

Apart from Samsung, rivals Huawei, Ericsson, OPPO, and Xiaomi are already working on 6G as well.
