Apple releases the world's first 5nm chip—the A14 Bionic processor

At the Apple event earlier, the Cupertino giant unveiled the new iPad Air, iPad 8th-Gen, Watch Series 6, and Watch SE. What intrigued us more is the chip powering the new iPad Air—the A14 Bionic processor.

The world's first 5nm SoC!

Normally Apple's new Bionic chip debuts with the new iPhones, but not in 2020.

Anyway, the Apple A14 Bionic announcement is still HUGE as it is the world's very first chipset built on the new 5nm process beating chips the 7nm chips that Android phones are using.

The new Bionic chip uses a new 6-core CPU, new 4-core GPU, 16-core Neural Engine, machine learning controller, advanced image signal processor, and Secure Enclave. Apple added that it can process up to 11 trillion operations per second.

The transistor count of this chip is 11.8 billion. In comparison, the Huawei HiSilicon Kirin 990 5G based on the 7nm+ EUV only comes with 10.3 billion transistors.

Apple said it has 40 percent CPU improvement and a 30 percent boost in graphics versus the A12. The company weirdly didn't compare it with the new A13 though. Based on estimates, it should have a 17 percent CPU performance increase and 8.3 percent GPU improvement.

Unlike most 2020 chips, Apple failed to mention if the A14 Bionic supports 5G or not.

Also, the launch of the new chip suggests that the iPhone 12 series launch is fast approaching.

Stay tuned for more info.
