During the MediaTek Virtual Coffee Session for the Philippine tech media earlier, claimed that the Philippines is one of the leaders in 5G development in Southeast Asia.

The Taiwanese chip giant highlighted the achievements of our local telcos regarding 5G advancements.

In its report, MediaTek said that in 2020 H1, Globe expanded its 5G network to more Platinum and postpaid customers. Globe and AIS also completed a 5G video call and intensified 5G deployments in Metro Manila and released a 5G-ready smartphone. Globe also powered UnionBank's first 5G-based smart branch.
In 2020 H2, MediaTek shared that Globe extended its 5G offering to prepaid users, tested 5G cloud gaming, and launched 5G-ready SIMs. Globe also launched its commercial service in Makati and BGC.
Meanwhile, Smart launched its 5G service in the Philippines and opened a 5G-powered eSports hub in the Philippines.
MediaTek also shared that they are in talks with the local telcos in the standardization and development of 5G in the Philippines. They also mentioned that the company is looking forward to work with the soon-to-launch 3rd telco DITO.
To recall, MediaTek's Senior Standards Specialist Johan Johansson is the Chairman of 3GPP. 3GPP develop protocols for mobile telecommunications.
The report suggests that the Philippines has started preparing for 5G earlier compared to when 4G was first introduced.
5G is still in its infancy stage, but we hope this trend will continue.
