NVIDIA buys ARM!

Both boards of NVIDIA and ARM approved the acquisition and the company is expected to close the transactions within 18 months. The next step is for them to pass regulatory approvals in China, US, UK, and EU.

The deal is expected to make NVIDIA an even larger player in mobile computing especially when it comes to bringing AI technology to platforms such as smartphones, PC, and self-driving cars.

The deal will also make ARM get more support for R&D efforts and access to NVIDIA's entire suite of products.

NVIDIA and ARM also confirmed that it will maintain its open licensing model and neutrality within exisiting customers.

NVIDIA said that it is planning to build an AI supercomputer powered by ARM CPUs at the Cambridge headquarters.

AI is the most powerful technology force of our time and has launched a new wave of computing, Jensen Huang, NVIDIA's CEO, said in a statement. In the years ahead, trillions of computers running AI will create a new internet-of-things that is thousands of times larger than today’s internet-of-people. Our combination will create a company fabulously positioned for the age of AI.

Obviously, the deal will also enable NVIDIA to take advantage of ARM's technology in making future chip designs.
