5G coming to affordable Snapdragon 4-series?

Qualcomm is bringing next-generation connectivity to the Snapdragon 4-series chips this coming first quarter of 2021. Motorola, OPPO, and Xiaomi are already in-line to offer smartphones with the unannounced chip for the 2021 release.

The chip manufacturer predicts that over 750 million 5G smartphones will ship by 2022 and will surpass over a billion users by 2023.

Snapdragon 8cx Gen 2 brings 5G to laptops

Laptops have begun adopting 5G which prompted Qualcomm to unveil the new 7nm Snapdragon 8cx Gen 2 5G compute platform. This is the successor to the original 8cx that powered Windows 10 laptops. The new chip features a 7W TDP package with up 18 percent faster performance than a 15W Intel Core i5 10th generation processor. This equates to 39 percent higher performance per watt.

The new SoC can handle 32MP cameras and can drive two external 4K displays.

The first device with the new 8cx Gen 2 is the Acer Spin 7 and it was able to last several days with a single charge. It supports mmWave and sub-6GHz 5G and the chip will support WiFi 6, Bluetooth 5.1, and Gigabit LAN connectivity. The new Acer has USB-C ports, an active stylus, and a touch screen.

It is equipped with an X55 5G modem with peak speeds of 7Gbps downloads and up to 3Gbps upload with mmWave connection while the X24 LTE modem tops out at 2Gbps download speeds.

Lastly, Qualcomm also announces the new QCC514x Bluetooth audio SoC for wireless audio accessories. It features the first-ever Qualcomm Adaptive Active-noise-cancellation. Qualcomm claims that this new Adaptive ANC can transition seamlessly between voice calls, music, and speaking to a digital assistant. It can even adjust the strength of the noise cancellation automatically based on the environment.
