Samsung recently filed for a camera tech patent dubbed as the ISOCELL Vizion ToF sensor.

Samsung will have its own ToF sensor soon?
ISOCELL Vizion is said to be a facial recognition system comprising a Time of flight optical sensor.
To recall, a ToF sensor is a 3D camera designed to measure depth and distance to object by using light that reflects on the object. It can also be used to create bokeh effect in back and front photos.
Most likely, the Samsung phone that will come with this sensor will still have the Live Focus video function, Quick Measure feature, and the 3D Scanner.
Samsung's ToF patent |
Based on the description, the sensor can be used for face detection. Probably, it has improved functionality versus current 3D ToF sensors.
This suggests that 3D sensors might be coming back to Samsung smartphones. To recall, the S20+ and S20 Ultra have DepthVision Cameras (3D ToF), but it was omitted on the Galaxy Note20 line because Sony was already preoccupied with Apple's ToF sensor orders.
Now that Samsung might soon have its own ToF sensor, it is rumored that the possible first device to use this tech is the Galaxy S21.
