Return of the King?

April 2020 and August 2020

In April 2020, Counterpoint reported that Huawei captured over 21 percent of the market and has finally overtaken Samsung in the top spot of the global smartphone market share. This was mainly because of the Korean Giant's decline in major markets in India and Europe. But in July and August, Samsung has seen a massive recovery as India has reopened from a nationwide lockdown.

Samsung has now reached its largest market share in India since 2018 by its aggressive online channel strategy that also benefitted from the opportunities that arose due to the anti-China sentiments in India.

This has also resulted in the widening of the gap between Samsung's top 1 spot and the Huawei's top 2 spot. Back in April, Huawei's 21 percent was expected to fall even further due to escalating US trade sanctions.

Xiaomi, on the other hand, has also been growing massively in markets where Huawei used to have a strong presence such as in Central Eastern Europe.

Apple has managed to maintain its market share even in the off-season period and with its recent launch of the iPhone 12 series, Counterpoint research expects that Apple's sales will increase but only in November as the launch was delayed.

Research Analyst Minsoo Kang says that Samsung, Apple, Xiaomi and OPPO will benefit the most from the current Geopolitical policies and political affairs among nations.
