MediaTek outs a new mid-range gaming mobile chip, the Helio G80

After launching the G90/T last year and G70 in January this year, MediaTek is showing that it is serious about gaming by launching the Helio G80.

Another promising MediaTek budget gaming chip

The MediaTek Helio G80 is slotted right in between the budget Helio G70 and the mid-range Helio G90T. Compared with Qualcomm chips, it should be close to the power of the Snapdragon 710/712.

The Helio G80 is a 12nm chip that comes with 2x ARM Cortex-A75 power cores clocked at 2.0GHz and 6x ARM Cortex-A55 efficiency chips at 1.8GHz. It is paired with the ARM Mali-G52 MC2 with a higher 950MHz speed versus the 820MHz of Helio G70.

To improve gaming, it has the HyperEngine Game Tech like the G90/G90T.

It also has support for up to FHD+ 60Hz screen, 2x LPDDRX RAM up to 8GB, eMMC 5.1 storage, and a 48MP single-cam at 17fps, 25MP single-cam at 30fps, and a 16MP + 16MP dual-cam at 30fps.

MediaTek highlighted that its ISP (Image Signal Processor) is capable of object recognition via Google Lens, Smart Photo Album, scene detection, scene segmentation with background removal, portrait mode enhancements, and facial recognition.

It also has EIS and Rolling Shutter Compensation support.

The chip also has WiFi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 5.0, and GPS/GLONASS/BeiDou/Galileo.

You will also find the Voice on Wakeup (VoW) support and an inertial navigation engine on the G80.

The G80 is expected to be available in affordable gaming smartphones soon.

Samsung Galaxy S20 could borrow this cool camera feature from the LG V40 ThinQ

Samsung Galaxy S11 Plus camera Ice UniverseIce Universe

Samsung’s Galaxy S20 series is launching next week and pretty much all major details about the phones have leaked. But we’re now getting information about some new camera features that the S20 flagships might house.

Serial tipster and XDA contributor Max Weinbach says that all three Galaxy S20 phones will get a camera feature called QuickTake. This will allow users to capture three individual photos at the same time from the main, ultra-wide, and telephoto cameras.

So when you hit that button to click a picture, the phones will actually take one image from each of the sensors. You will then be able to go into the image gallery and select which photo you want to keep.

Samsung’s QuickTake feature seems similar in functionality to LG’s Triple Shot feature which was introduced with the LG V40 ThinQ. LG’s triple camera phone also allowed users to take a photo with each lens via this mode.

In addition to saving three images in the photos app, the LG V40 ThinQ also created a short video by compiling the images. The Galaxy S20 trio will also do that (albeit to an even greater extent) with another rumored feature called Single Take.

According to Weinbach, this feature will basically let you pan around your S20, S20 Plus, or S20 Ultra to take pictures and videos from all three lenses. The captured media will be automatically edited, perhaps for social media sharing.

New night mode also incoming?

Samsung has apparently also filed a trademark request for the term ‘Super ISO’ with the UK Intellectual Property Office. This was first spotted by LetsGoDigital.

While we don’t know if this is a new feature for the Galaxy S20 series, it could improve night time photography on the new flagships.

As you may know, low-lit scenes require you to increase ISO levels thereby increasing the light sensitivity of your camera. This results in brighter images. Currently, the Galaxy S10 and Note 10  phones on Android 10 allows one to set the ISO at 3200.

We’re not sure if the new feature will make the ISO range even higher. It could also just improve the existing Night Mode in the Samsung Camera app.

Guess we’ll have to wait to see what Super ISO is all about and if it’s actually headed to the Galaxy S20 series.

Are you looking forward to the above mentioned camera features on the Galaxy S20 phones? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.

Nokia ‘Captain America’ could be the super soldier HMD needs in 2020

Nokia Captain America, possibly the Nokia 5.2, could be a big step above the likes of the Nokia 6.1 Plus even.

The supposed Nokia 5.2 could be a big step above the likes of the Nokia 6.1 Plus in some areas.

Nokia brand licensee HMD Global has already announced an event in Barcelona as part of MWC 2020 festivities. We’re expecting to see several mid-range devices at the launch, and it looks like one of them may have broken cover.

Dependable tipster Evan Blass has leaked a Nokia phone on Twitter (private account), apparently touting the code-name Captain America. Check out the images below.

Blass adds that the phone could potentially be the Nokia 5.2, saying it offers 6GB of RAM, and 64GB of storage. The leaker hasn’t shared much in the way of other details (e.g. processor and battery), but the pictures also show a quad rear camera combo, rear fingerprint scanner, a waterdrop notch, and TA-1234 model number.

Otherwise, the veteran leaker says the new phone will launch on March 4 for ~$180. If the price and name is confirmed, that would be a steep drop compared to its predecessor, the Nokia 5.1. The previous device launched at MWC 2019, packing a 219 euro (~$253) price tag. It’s also possible that it belongs to a different device series, owing to the amount of RAM and storage, as well as the number of cameras.

The apparent Nokia Captain America price seems very competitive for a device with a quad rear camera setup then, but hopefully the rest of the phone is pretty decent too. We’ll just have to wait until HMD’s MWC 2020 event to get all the official details.

How Chinese tech giants are assisting in the battle against coronavirus with AI

The coronavirus outbreak, which originated in China late last year, has become a global health hazard. Last month, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared a global emergency with more than 14,500 registered cases across the world. Many countries across the world have issued travel advisories, and some have even banned or restricted people traveling from China. With scientists working hard to find out a cure for this deadly virus, Chinese tech giants Baidu and Alibaba have opened up their gene sequencing AI tools to help them find a solution. Alibaba said last week it had partnered with The Global Health Drug…
