OnePlus, Apple grow at massive rates in India despite stiff competition

OnePlus 7T Pro color haze blue

A recent report from Counterpoint Research revealed India’s premium smartphone segment saw huge YoY growth in 2019. The market grew by a whopping 29% thanks to the increase of affordable high-end devices, a plethora of user upgrade plans, and aggressive discounts from companies such as OnePlus.

OnePlus alone pulled impressive numbers, seeing 28% YoY growth and claiming about one-third of the market. The company also passed Samsung to become India’s leading premium smartphone manufacturer for the entirety of 2019, which was a first for OnePlus.

Unfortunately, Samsung saw a 2% decrease in YoY performance, while Apple saw a massive 41% YoY growth, pitting the two companies head-to-head for second place in 2020. Samsung’s decline was most likely due to stiff competition from Oppo, Asus, Xiaomi, and of course, OnePlus. We’ll need to wait and see if the company’s new Galaxy S10 Lite, Note 10 Lite, and Galaxy A series of devices can help it take back some of its lost market share this coming year.

We should continue to see overall growth with a solid performance from OnePlus and strong competition from Apple. Aggressive deals, competitive pricing, and plenty of upgrade plans should continue to push growth in this segment, which can only be a good thing for consumers.

A developer and YouTuber named Denis Shiryaev recently used “several neural networks” to update a famous French short film from 1895 to make it appear as though it were shot on a modern phone. Called “L’arrivĂ©e d’un train en gare de La Ciotat,” the 50-second French short documentary shows a train arriving at Ciotat train station. The film is famous for allegedly causing theater goers at the time to panic out of fear the train would burst through the screen and crash into them. While this tale is largely dismissed as little more than legend, it’s easy to imagine the…

YouTube claims to share billions in ad money with creators, unlike Instagram

Google this week revealed details about YouTube‘s ad revenue for the first time since it purchased the company, and the numbers are kind of staggering. The site earned just over $15 billion in ad revenue last year — and it’d be quick to tell you just how much of that goes back to its creators. It doesn’t sound like much — at least until you compare the site to social media rival Instagram. You can read the breakdown of Google’s financial results here. In addition to the $15.1 billion it earned from the ad revenue, it accrued another $3 billion…
