Logitech built a 3-in-1 charger for Apple fans

Apple’s AirPower may have never come to fruition (RIP), but in its wake several companies have tried to fill the void of wireless charging solutions that allow you to charge all your devices at once. The latest to enter the fray is Logitech, with its new Powered line of wireless charging docks. Chief among them is a $129 dock that is able to charge three devices at once. Unlike the AirPower, however, the 3-in-1 dock doesn’t just let you drop any wireless charging device onto a mat willy-nilly. Instead, it is specifically designed to charge an Apple Watch alongside two…

We can’t discuss eugenics without looking at its atrocious history

Andrew Sabisky, a UK government adviser, recently resigned over comments supporting eugenics. Around the same time, the evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins – best known for his book The Selfish Gene – provoked controversy when tweeting that, while eugenics is morally deplorable, it “would work”. Eugenics can be described as the science and practice of improving the human race through the selection of “good” hereditary traits. Eugenics inevitably brings to mind the atrocities committed by the Nazis, who used eugenic ideology as the rationale for large-scale forced sterilization, involuntary euthanasia and the Holocaust. Given this sinister history, it’s bound to be…

Huawei Nova 7i: First Camera Samples

A modern smartphone experience won't be that fun if it can't take good images. Huawei knows that and it is the reason why the Nova 7i is equipped with plenty of cameras despite its PHP 13,990 affordable price tag. Let's check it out!
The quad-camera system of the Nova 7i

At the back, it has a total of four cameras found in the square camera bump. The handset sports a 48MP f/1.8 primary camera with PDAF and CAF autofocus systems paired with an 8MP f/2.4 120-degree ultra-wide-angle secondary camera, 2MP f/2.4 4cm camera for macro slots, and another 2MP sensor for depth effect. Underneath, it has a single LED flash.

As expected, it has most of the Huawei modes such the Master AI, HDR, different filters,  Aperture, Portrait with Face Beauty,  handheld AIS Super Night, Light painting, and Pro modes.

For those who like taking selfies, it comes with a 16MP f/2.0 snapper aided with AI,  Super Night Selfie 2.0, and screen flash.

Daylight
Daylight

In daylight, this device flexed its capabilities. It showed great details, colors, and range. It has a bit of artifact, but forgivable. This is one of the best-looking daylight shots for the price so far.
100 percent crop
100 percent crop

Upon closer inspection at max 100 percent crop, you can still see that the shot is detailed and not that noisy. It means that the shot I got above is a well-detailed shot.
Well lit
Well lit

In another well-lit shot, details and exposure along with the colors are great again. The details on the wall can still be seen and it isn't overly bright.
Against the light
Against the light

For against the light shots, it'll struggle a little. But, it is still not as underexposed as other mid-range camera phones. The dynamic range is still respectable here. All you need to do is adjust the exposure in the brightness of the gallery app of your phone and this shot will be social media-ready.
Ultra-wide
Ultra-wide

And yes, this phone has a secondary wide cam. Even if it isn't a large sensor, the quality is still quite good. It is still detailed and the colors are consistent and similar to the main cam. Distortion is there like other wide cams, but it isn't overly warped, unlike other entry-level and mid-rangers.
Ultra-wide against the light
Ultra-wide against the light

For against the light scenes, the wide-cam can still perform. The loss of details and dynamic range is a bit more noticeable versus the against the light shot using the main cam though. But, that's understandable.
Normal, 6x zoom
Normal, 6x zoom

If you like to zoom, you can. In daylight, it is decent up to 4x zoom. It maxes at 6x and it is still respectable to my eyes.
Normal, macro
Normal, macro

The other feature that I like about its cam is the macro mode. It has the ability to take super close-up images without the need of using the zoom. Also, it is a respectable macro mode, unlike other potato macro modes.
Portrait mode (Normal and 100 percent crop)
Portrait mode (Normal and 100 percent crop)

Using the fourth 2MP f/2.4 depth cam, you can create shots with DSLR-like background blur. In my experience, it is alright in quality, but not that great.

Normal vs night mode
Normal vs night mode

In low light, thanks to its 48MP shooter with 4-in-1 pixel binning tech, the Nova 7i shoots images with good exposure, colors, and details. It isn't that noisy as well. It also has a handheld AI-assisted Night mode up to 6 seconds that will even lessen the noise and improve details along with dynamic range and exposure.
Night mode
Night mode

The Night mode of this device is not overly done as well. It isn't too sharp and not overexposed. Just right so far.
Normal selfie and selfie with Bokeh and Face beauty
Normal selfie and selfie with Bokeh and Face beauty

For selfies, it has a 16MP snapper that shoots detailed well-lit selfies. It has a decent looking Portrait mode with Beauty mode as well.
Low light selfie
Low light selfie

It also has screen flash to still let users take good selfies even in the dark. It is one of the better performing low light selfie cams for me.

Quick thoughts

To my eyes, the first images that I got are near 2019 flagship-grade and that's very impressive.

It shoots highly detailed images in the dark, the wide cam looks good, the zoom is decent, the macro mode is not potato quality, and it takes great images in the dark.

The bokeh mode could be improved, but its performance is still considered decent for the price.

Even the selfie cam looks great for a PHP 13,990 phone so far.

We will further explore its cameras and will show you more of our findings along with the video samples in our upcoming full review.

Are you guys impressed as well? Let us know!

Disney+ quietly lands on India’s Hotstar ahead of launch date

Last night, Disney quietly uploaded its catalog of Disney+ original shows and movies to its Indian subsidiary Hotstar. Disney+ is set to launch officially in the country on March 29. The catalog includes shows such as The Mandalorian, Diary of a Future President, Marvel‘s Hero Project, and The World According to Jeff Goldblum. Hotstar’s Android and iOS apps (as well as the website) have since been updated with a new logo and branding. The new description on the App Store and Play store reads: For our India users we’re bringing the world’s best stories from the best storytellers at Disney, Marvel, Pixar and Star…

Here’s when you can expect Disney Plus to land in India (Update: Early launch!)

Disney Plus Hotstar

Update, March 11, 2020 (4AM ET): Disney CEO Bob Iger previously confirmed that Disney Plus would launch in India on March 29 via Hotstar. It looks like the company has jumped the gun and quietly flipped the switch.

We’ve noticed that the Hotstar app has been renamed to Disney Plus Hotstar. The new name isn’t the only change, as we’ve also got plenty of content from Marvel, Pixar, and Disney’s animated catalog. And yes, The Mandalorian is also available on the app.

Disney isn’t charging extra if you’re already on Hotstar’s Premium plan (we’re not sure about new subscribers though), and you can download the content for offline playback too.

Iger earlier stated that there would be a premium Disney Plus tier in India that includes the entire library of programming, so this looks like the offering in question. But the CEO also said there would be a basic tier focused on the legacy Disney library and not including original content. I guess we’ll need to wait for this option.

Have you received Disney Plus content in Hotstar? Let us know in the comments section!

Original article, November 14, 2019 (5:29 PM ET): Disney Plus has seen a pretty huge response in its first two days of launch. The platform already has 10 million subscribers and counting, and it’s only available in the US, Canada, and the Netherlands. Well, there’s some good news for our Indian readers, as we now have a tentative timeline for the launch of Disney’s streaming service in the country.

TechCrunch reports that Disney plans to bring Disney Plus to India and some South Asian countries by second half of 2020. Citing sources familiar with the matter, the publication says that Disney Plus content will be a part of Hotstar in India.

Disney Plus vs Netflix: Which streaming service should you choose?

Hotstar is the most popular streaming services in the country, with over 300 million monthly active users. The move to merge the Disney Plus catalog with Hotstar seems quite predictable since Disney owns Hotstar. It would be much easier and less time consuming for Disney to use Hotstar’s ready-made streaming infrastructure in India.

Disney Plus features a large collection of movies and TV shows from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Lucasfilm, and National Geographic. This will substantially add to Hotstar’s content offerings in India and heat up streaming wars in the country.

Hotstar has been riding high on the wave of exclusive cricket streaming deals in India. It also has most of HBO’s film and TV catalog, which is what makes it pretty popular.

However, Hotstar’s highest streaming resolution is set at 1080p. It’s unclear if the service will gain 4K HDR streaming when for Disney Plus content like the Disney Plus app. If it does, it will truly challenge the likes of Netflix which offers support for Dolby Vision and 4K streaming.

With all this new content and a possible bump in resolution, Hotstar’s subscription pricing could also see a change. TechCrunch reports that Disney plans to raise Hotstar’s monthly subscription fee before the Disney Plus India launch.

Hotstar is currently priced at Rs 299 (~$4)/month or Rs 999 (~$14)/year. Sources tell the publication that the price hike could happen by the end of the first quarter next year and that prices could double to $30/year (Rs 2,160).

After its India launch, Disney Plus reportedly plans to expand Hotstar with all the new content to Indonesia and Malaysia.
