Counterpoint reports that global smartphone market wholesale average selling price (ASP) increased 10 percent year-on-year in Q2 2020 even with the declined by 15 percent year-on-year during the same quarter.

The report includes major markets such as North America, Latin America, Europe, Middle East, Africa, China and APAC. Each market except Latin America saw an increase in ASP. China now sees an average selling price of USD 310 which is a massive 13 percent increase year-on-year while Europe only saw 1 percent increase. Meanwhile North America has the highest ASP at USD 471 nut only saw a 7 percent increase year-on-year.

Counterpoint suggests that the price increase is because premium smartphones are still selling well with a small 8 percent decline even though overall smartphone sales have been slipping world wide. Over 10 percent of the premium smartphone segment sales during the second quarter were 5G-equipped devices. This also attributed to the strong sales of the Premium segment.

While other countries are suffering from the impacts from COVID-19, China has been recovering and has resulted in the country contributing over 34 percent of global smartphone revenue in the quarter. This is the highest revenue of any quarter since 2016.

Apple accounted for a massive 34 percent majority in smartphone sales in the second quarter with Huawei in second place at 20 percent. This is the first time Huawei (including HONOR) surpassed Samsung in both shipments and revenue despite the US ban on Huawei in markets outside of China.
