LG confirms its twisty smartphone is coming later this month

  • LG has confirmed the announcement date for a swiveling smartphone, which could be the LG Wing.
  • The device will be the first in its new Explorer Project lineup.
  • The virtual launch event will take place on September 14 in South Korea.

We’ve detailed in previous exclusive videos the daily productivity and gaming chops of the rumored LG Wing. Now, the Korean firm is getting ready to launch a device that seemingly fits the bill.

In a brief teaser posted to YouTube on Wednesday, LG confirmed a September 14 announcement date for its upcoming swiveling dual-screen smartphone. Beyond the date confirmation, the clip itself merely confirms LG’s use of a rotating second screen, which as we’ve discovered, could be a boon for gamers and productivity fiends.

In a separate release, LG also confirms the new device forms part of its “Explorer Project.” According to LG, the project will include a number of devices of which the Wing will be the first. It’s also calling this project a new “category” which perhaps hints at the swiveling screen design running throughout the lineup, and the company’s hope that it will catch on.

LG is no stranger to redefining the boundaries of smartphone convention, even if previous efforts, like the LG G5, haven’t been as successful as they may have hoped. Still, the company does have its good days. The dual-screen cover system used by the LG V60 and LG Velvet remains a fairly practical alternative to foldable phones.

As for specifications, LG didn’t provide specific details about the upcoming device but did say it’ll be powered by a Qualcomm chipset. Earlier rumors noted that the new phone would employ the Snapdragon 765 chipset, a detail that may also serve to keep the LG Wing’s potential price down.
